They have all sorts of functions, explains Amanda Kostro Miller, a registered dietitian and licensed dietitian nutritionist of the herb and botanical medicine resource center The Botanical Institute, including, “nourishing the skin, regulating hormones, fighting inflammation and filling in various nutritional gaps.”

There are many different types of multivitamins on the market, including ones that are gender, age or life-stage specific. While it might seem like there are too many, Kostro Miller says this is a good thing since everyone has different nutritional needs. “When you compare all the different options, you’ll notice each multivitamin has different amounts of vitamins and minerals based on gender, age or lifestyle needs,” she says. “Different products may even contain proprietary blends with added benefits for anti-inflammation, joint health or memory support.”

Formulations will vary, but many multivitamins for men contain:

The main benefit, she explains, is that it, “covers your nutritional bases” and supplies nutrients your normal diet may not. “For example, vegans and vegetarians tend to present with nutrient deficiencies in iron, vitamin D and B12, to name a few,” she says. “Taking a multivitamin is almost always necessary for those individuals.”

It is possible to have too much of a good thing, even when it comes to multivitamins. Take caution in using them, warns Kostro Miller, particularly if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other supplements. “Toxicity and over-supplementation can be real concerns and present with symptoms such as skin discoloration, pain, kidney stress and more,” she says.

Kostro Miller notes that, specifically, fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K should not be overconsumed. “Fat-soluble vitamins are not excreted easily by the body and can build up over time, leading to toxicity,” she says. Other examples include too much selenium causing hair loss and too much iron causing dark stools.

It’s hard to deny the convenience of these supplements, but multivitamins shouldn’t be your only source of nutrients. Talk to your doctor to get a more personalized sense of how to add multivitamins to your diet.

Some supplement companies recommend taking your multivitamin with your largest meal of the day to allow for optimal absorption. Read the label carefully, or better yet, speak with your doctor about the best time to take your selected multivitamin.

If you want to increase your stamina or boost your metabolism, she adds, look for a brand that supports that.
