Steve Bannon Requests His July 1 Prison Reporting Date Be Dropped

Topline

Ex-Trump adviser Steve Bannon filed an emergency request Tuesday seeking to have the start of his prison sentence on July 1 dropped so he can appeal his contempt of Congress conviction from 2022, just days after he was ordered to report to jail next month over defying his subpoena to give testimony to the House Jan. 6 committee.

Key Facts

Bannon filed the request with a federal appeals court in Washington D.C., with his counsel saying he “intends to vigorously pursue his remaining appeals” in the contempt of Congress case.

Bannon is seeking a ruling on his request by June 18, less than two weeks before he is scheduled to start a four-month prison sentence.

Bannon’s legal team said it is prepared to take his case to the Supreme Court after the June 18 ruling is scheduled, “if necessary.”

If the court approves Bannon’s request, the decision would further lengthen his years-long stint remaining free from imprisonment following his 2022 sentencing.

Tangent

Peter Navarro, another ex-Trump adviser, asked the Supreme Court to drop his prison reporting date earlier this year following his own four-month sentence for a contempt of Congress conviction. His request was denied. Navarro reported to prison in March.

Key Background

Bannon received his prison sentence in October 2022 following his defiance of a subpoena to provide testimony to the House Jan. 6 committee. Alongside his four-month prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a fine of $6,500. Attorneys for Bannon have argued his prison sentence can continue to be postponed, citing his ability to make an appeal to the D.C. Circuit court or Supreme Court, despite an appeals court rejecting a postponement request last month.
