Topline
Sony’s “Spider-Man” spin-off “Madame Web” earned the unwanted title of worst-reviewed movie of the year, ahead of a group of horror movies, an animated feature and at least one other big-budget flop.
Key Facts
“Madame Web,” Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man-adjacent superhero thriller starring Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott and Emma Roberts, took the top spot for worst-reviewed movie of the year, receiving a lackluster 26/100 critic score on Metacritic and a paltry 11% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, despite its reported $80 million budget.
Among some of the other worst-rated movies of 2024 were the creepy Altitude Film’s sequel “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2,” which earned a 27/100 score from critics on Metacritic and a tepid 47% score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as Chris Pine’s “Poolman” (29/100 on Metacritic and 22% on Rotten Tomatoes).
Several biger-budget movies also failed to impress, including “The Garfield Movie” with a reported $60 million budget and 36% Rotten Tomatoes score (31/100 on Metacritic), as well as “Argylle,” one of the biggest flops of the year with a $200 million reported budget, and dismal rating (35/100 on Metacritic and 33% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Chief Critics
Critics unanimously chided “Madame Web,” with The New York Times lamenting its “absurd” story, “snort-out-loud risible” dialogue and “uninspired” fights. The Guardian did not pull back the punches, calling the Sony superhero flick a “tangled mess” that received a slate of terrible reviews unseen since the uncanny valley nightmare that was 2019’s “Cats.”
Key Background
“Madame Web” grossed a dismal $23.54 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, making it one of Hollywood’s biggest duds of the year. Among major releases (at least 3,000 theaters), the “Spider-Man” spin-off ranked 10th lowest grossing since its release, pulling in just over $43 million in the U.S. since its release in February. The lowest grossing movie was horror-romance “Lisa Frankenstein,” which has made less than $10 million, followed by “The Watchers” ($17.7 million), and “Ordinary Angels” ($19.17 million).
