Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero's producer, Jun Furuya, recently released some gameplay information that gives some insight into how the highly anticipated upcoming game is being developed.
DBSZ is slightly over three months away, but the anticipation is already at a fever pitch.
As I write this, more than 1,000 people are waiting for the premiere of the DBSZ character trailer on Bandai Namco's YouTube channel.
Furuya revealed this information in an interview with Nishikawa-kun of Famitsu. According to Furuya, DBSZ doesn't carry the same responsibility as a title created to become an eSport.
"I want you to think of it as a fighting action game where you can play Dragon Ball," Furuya said. "I'm sure some fans have their own preferences, like 'when this move comes, you should return it with this move, not avoid it.' The appeal of this game is that you can perform these actions with your own hands as much as possible. However, it is not a casual game, and you can enjoy deep tactics as you improve your skills. We are not throwing away the balance of the battles, so we are currently adjusting it so that you can enjoy online battles for a long time. However, unlike eSports titles, we do not have the idea of emphasizing fairness between characters. Instead, we place importance on the character's personality."
This likely means that there will be at least a few overpowered characters. While we don't know the roster, and Furuya has been very protective of releasing any character information, you have to wonder just how powerful Dragon Ball Super Broly could be in the hands of a skilled player.
In many genres of gaming that are based on well-known source material, developers are able to exercise freedom when they aren't beholden to too many elements that have to simulate the intellectual property the game is based on.
In sports video games, it is sometimes challenging to develop around real-life athletes and teams to maintain balance. Hardcore fans of DB should appreciate the unbridled delivery of iconic characters, as it is actually a better representation of the universe they love so dearly.
While Furuya describes DBSZ as a 'Let's Play Dragon Ball' experience, it was refreshing to read that the title will still feature "deep tactics."
Furuya's comments suggest that the game will focus heavily on the character's unique abilities and personalities rather than striving for perfect balance, as seen in eSports titles. This info could mean that certain characters may have distinctive strengths that make them particularly powerful in the hands of skilled players. While specific details about the roster remain under wraps, the anticipation surrounding powerful characters is even more palpable. Most series fans hope for a gameplay experience emphasizing the fun and excitement of playing as their favorite characters, with deep tactical elements to master as they improve their skills.
Expect fans to scope out the trailer, which will be released on June 26, to learn as many details as possible. Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero releases on October 11 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
