Topline

Southern Florida has seen record-breaking rainfall this week, leading to flooding in some areas that could persist into Friday evening, the National Weather Service said Thursday.

Key Facts

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for multiple counties—Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade and Sarasota—on Wednesday, with the mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, also declaring a local state of emergency.

More rain is expected Thursday afternoon and a flood watch remains in effect for southern Florida until Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Four to 8 inches of rain could fall across southern Florida, the NWS said, with some areas potentially receiving more than 10 inches.

A disaster modeler told Bloomberg Thursday that damages from the storms could potentially cost the state more than $1 billion.
