How A Blanket Saved My Spouse’s And My Sleep Sanity

A good marriage is about compromise. Who gets the remote tonight? Are we having Italian or Thai for dinner? Should we go see your parents or mine for the holidays? While my spouse and I had figured all of that big stuff out, what we could never agree on was our bed—specifically, our blanket. I get too hot; my spouse gets too cold. There was no Goldilocks solution. We tried every combination of sheet, blanket, comforter and quilt you can think of—but one of us always ended up freezing or sweating all night long. This did not make for the most restful nights.

There’s also the fact that most blankets are too small for our bed, barely covering our 15-inch mattress plus 3-inch mattress topper. Even when labeled as oversized, blankets would hang over just 3 or 4 inches on either side of the mattress. That means one of us ends up uncovered in the middle of the night when the other rolls over. And then one of us is angrily yanking the blanket to get covered up again (okay, the angry one is me).

But then I discovered the Muslin Comfort 365 Blanket. The blanket is made from 100% cotton muslin, a type of light, woven fabric with a history that dates back thousands of years. In fact, muslin is one of the oldest fabrics on record, with origins dating to ancient India.

I’ve never liked the weirdly silky feel of synthetic materials, so I was attracted to the idea of a muslin blanket. I was already using linen sheets because of their breathability, and since Muslin Comfort claims its blanket is naturally temperature-regulating, my spouse and I decided to give it a try.

Muslin Comfort 365 Blanket (Oversized Twin)

The blanket comes in 20 colors to match every decor. We opted for the “undyed” option, which has a neutral creamy-beige hue. It’s definitely on the pricier side (as compared to discount store blankets), though the company does offer discounts occasionally.

Once the blanket arrived, we knew it was a keeper. It’s attractive, soft and has a good heft to it. But it’s not super heavy, so you don’t feel like you’re being smothered, like I did when we (very) briefly tried a weighted blanket. I also love that the blanket is OEKO-TEX certified, so I know we’re not breathing in harsh chemicals.

First night out, we both noticed it felt “just right” for both of us when it came to temperature. And, incredibly, the blanket really is generously sized. The king size measures 120 inches x 120 inches, versus typical king blankets that are usually 110 inches x 96 inches. That’s more like the size of a bedspread than a typical blanket, which means no more middle-of-the-night blanket-yanking sessions.

In truth, if you wanted a more traditional fit, a queen-size blanket probably would be adequate for a king-size bed. But I’m not sorry we went with a king because I prefer the appearance of the overhang with our extra-deep mattress and topper. It also looks nice layered with a decorative quilt. While it does take a while to dry such a huge blanket, we’ve found the use of wool dryer balls speeds things up.

The company suggests you can use the blanket European style, which means you don’t layer it with a top sheet. But we’ve continued to use a top sheet—mainly because we prefer linen sheets, which also allow for airflow.

After six months of use and weekly washes, the Muslin Comfort 365 Blanket still looks good, feels good and best of all, helps us both sleep without waking up too hot or too cold. And because of its generous size, there are no more blanket-hogging battles in the middle of the night. Now we’re both sleeping happily ever after.
