The Best Places To Buy Maternity Clothes To Look And Feel Great

It can be tough to find outfits that fit during pregnancy, which inevitably leads to the hunt for new clothing. The best places to buy maternity clothes offer items to see you through the next few months, with chic pieces you can comfortably wear after giving birth. You don’t necessarily need to get an entirely new wardrobe when you’re expecting a little one, says stylist Lauren Rae Levy. Instead, she recommends investing in a few key maternity pieces and padding out your looks with items you can wear after baby arrives.

“While it's true that maternity clothes are only needed for a specific stage of life, there's a real sense of worth that comes with honoring every iteration of your body,” says Jenny Greenstein, a personal stylist for pregnancy and motherhood based in New York City. “That said, most women find their maternity capsule useful well into the fourth trimester and beyond.”

Whether you’re looking to invest in an entire pregnancy wardrobe or just want to snap up a few key items, these are the best places to buy maternity clothes to help you look and feel your best. If want more recommendations, don’t miss our list of the best maternity clothes, which features our favorite individual pieces.

Best Place To Buy Maternity Clothes Overall

Hatch: Elevated Pieces That Can Be Worn Beyond Pregnancy

MOST POPULAR

The Easy Nursing Jumpsuit

Hatch is known for its on-trend and classic styles, crafted from quality fabrics. The brand was created by a mom who wanted to wear something more stylish than what she found on the market. In the mix is bump-hugging dresses, a range of jumpsuits, intimates, work clothes and even evening wear. Hatch isn’t cheap, but many of the brand’s clothes are durable enough to be worn through multiple pregnancies—and some even work well after baby arrives. Hatch’s Easy Nursing Jumpsuit is a functional favorite, with a hidden elastic waistband and adjustable wrap top with plenty of room for nursing once your little one is here.

“I'd recommend browsing this high-end maternity retailer for fashion-forward staple pieces, like a versatile dress or a pair of designer denim to last you through the trimesters,” says says Karen Teitjen, Vetted’s senior updates who is also currently pregnant. “The brand also offers clever solutions-oriented items like the Head Peace headband that comes with ice pack inserts, which I picked up to help combat pregnancy headaches.” One thing to note: Hatch charges shipping for returns, so keep this in mind before ordering multiple sizes.

Beyond Yoga: Soft, Stretchy Pieces For Laidback Days

Spacedye Love The Bump Maternity Pocket Midi Legging

Beyond Yoga isn’t technically a maternity clothing line, but the brand has built a name for itself with its robust pregnancy loungewear basics that work well at the gym, brunch and beyond. Choose from bump-hugging tank tops, buttery-soft leggings with pockets and a range of sweatshirts in pretty and neutral shades. Many items, like the Love the Bump leggings (which top our list of the best maternity leggings) can be worn down the road by making simple tweaks, like folding down the waistband.

Quince's emphasis on high-quality staples permeates through its maternity line, which is especially ideal for building a versatile wardrobe to dress an ever-growing baby bump—and a postpartum body afterward. In addition to being made with higher-end materials, many of these basics come in multi-packs, which gives you more bang for your buck. As a final note, returns are easy (and free) as well.  "After receiving my first clothing haul, Quince quickly became my favorite retailer for maternity clothes,” says Teitjen. “Some of my favorites include ultra-soft modal pocket T-shirts as well as more fitted ruched tees and ribbed tanks for layering.”

Why Trust Forbes Vetted

The parenting writers and editors at Forbes Vetted know the importance of good maternity clothes—we’ve worn a slew of them. We’ve spent countless hours researching products for the maternity and new parent phases, and have personally shopped at most of these retailers during our own pregnancies.

Writer Korin Miller has had five pregnancies, and compiled a large pregnancy wardrobe in the process. To enhance our knowledge, we consulted with two stylists who specialize in dressing expectant moms. We also researched the market to ensure we recommend the best and most comfortable brands. This article is regularly reviewed for accuracy and freshness, and was most recently updated in March 2024.

How We Chose The Best Places To Buy Maternity Clothes

To select the best places to buy maternity clothes, we first relied on our personal experience with a bevy of brands to ensure we only recommended stores that offer comfortable, stylish clothes you can live in for nine months or more. From there, we consulted with two stylists—Lauren Rae Levy, founder of the LRL Group, and Jenny Greenstein, a personal stylist for pregnancy and motherhood, and founder of Your Soul Style—to get a professional take on the best clothes options for pregnant people.

After that, we spoke to several new moms and monitored the market to see which brands are buzziest right now. We also analyzed reviews from real customers to see what they thought about their purchases. Only products with an average rating of four or more stars were recommended for this story.

What To Look For In The Best Maternity Clothes

There are a few elements to consider when shopping for the best maternity clothes. Keep these in mind.

Cost

“The beautiful thing about maternity clothing is that, like regular clothes, these looks are offered at a variety of price points,” Levy says.

While these are items you’re likely going to wear into the fourth trimester, it’s important to consider how much you want to spend before you shop. “Invest in the item you are obsessed with as a keepsake for a photo shoot that you will want to remember,” Levy says. “Otherwise, invest in staple items that you will get lots of use out of. For example, black maternity leggings or spandex shorts, a pair of light and dark maternity denim if you need jeans for your everyday lifestyle, and a solid maternity tank or two that you can layer things over.”

Fabrics

Pregnancy can be uncomfortable enough, which is why it’s crucial to find items that won’t irritate you. “Look for fabrics with stretch and bottoms with elastic waistbands,” Greenstein says. Cotton, polyester, rayon and modal can all be comfortable during this time. The best fabrics for you ultimately depend on what you personally like, though.

“Some expecting moms love the idea of their bump feeling snug and hugged for support. For those moms, they will be looking at form-fitting spandex and compression-like fabrics,” Levy says. “Other moms love the idea of loose-fitting fabrics on their bump. The fabric one wears will tend to differ based on the time of year the pregnancy is in.”

Return Policy

Given that your body is changing quickly, it’s a good idea to purchase from a store with a good return policy. While most clothes are sized for pregnancy, your body will often change during this time and, with it, your size can, too. You also want to have the option to exchange or return something if it just doesn’t look right in person.
