How Would Anthony Gordon Fit Into Arne Slot’s New-Look Liverpool?

Following

Newcastle United is in a difficult position. The St James’ Park club might have to sell at least one of its key players to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) ahead of the 2024/25 season with Anthony Gordon reportedly offered to Liverpool. Talks have apparently taken place between the two clubs.

Liverpool has entered a new era this summer with Arne Slot taking over from Jurgen Klopp. The Dutch manager is remoulding the team he inherited at Anfield and it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Gordon could be a Liverpool player before the Premier League’s PSR deadline of July 30. So how would he fit into Slot’s team?

Slot already has Luis Diaz as an option on the left side of his attack, although there has been speculation about the Colombian’s future at Anfield in recent times. Indeed, Barcelona have been linked with Diaz who hasn’t achieved the consistency many at Liverpool hoped he would when he was signed from Porto in January 2022.

Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez are also capable of playing on the left wing, but both attackers are more comfortable and most effective operating through the centre. Gordon, on the other hand, is direct with his running and would give Liverpool a different dimension on the left side of its attacking front three.

At Newcastle, Gordon has developed quickly. The youngster’s potential was clear during his time at Everton where he made his Premier League breakthrough, but Gordon has reached a higher level at St James’ Park, adding consistency and maturity to his game. His tally of 21 goal contributions last season reflects this.

On the right side of Liverpool’s attack, Mohamed Salah is still one of the most reliable goalscorers in the Premier League. However, the Egyptian has been the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League over the last 12 months and so it’s possible Salah will leave Liverpool at some point in the near future.

This means Liverpool will need new attackers to build around and this is where the addition of Gordon this summer could be a good idea, particularly if Newcastle United is willing to sell the England international for a knock-down price in order to meet the PSR. This is an opportunity Liverpool would be wise to capitalise on.

Newcastle and Liverpool are direct rivals with both teams aiming to compete for top honours and titles in the coming years. This summer, however, could see some trade between the pair with a deal for Gordon potentially on the table. The English winger could be an important part of Slot’s new-look Liverpool.
