Topline

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton will attend her first public event—King Charles III’s birthday parade this weekend—since she confirmed she is in the early stages of chemotherapy treatment for a cancer diagnosis in March.

Key Facts

Princess Kate said she will be attending the parade, which is scheduled for Saturday, in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, and said she hopes “to join a few public engagements over the summer,” though she cautioned she is “not out of the woods yet.”

Kate will be a part of the carriage parade, Trooping The Colour, and will be waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Saturday, the BBC reported.

Kate said she has “a few more months” of chemotherapy treatment but she is “making good progress.”

The princess—who the palace said had been out of the public eye for a planned abdominal surgery—confirmed in March she was battling cancer after speculation, concern and unsubstantiated rumors about her health, personal life and marriage to Prince William spread.

Surprising Fact

Saturday will be Kate’s first public event since Christmas.

Key Background

Friday’s post was the most significant update on Kate’s health the public has received since she announced the diagnosis in March. Prior to that, the palace had not given an update on Kate since January, when it announced she would be recovering from her surgery in private. On Mother’s Day in the U.K., Kensington Palace released a photo of Kate and her children that news outlets shared but later retracted, saying it was heavily manipulated. The palace issued a statement from Kate saying she edited the image herself and apologizing for confusion it caused, though it had already led to spiraling conspiracies questioning whether Kate was still alive or married to Prince William.

What We Don’t Know

What kind of cancer Kate has. In the video announcing her diagnosis, the princess said her abdominal surgery “was successful,” but tests afterwards confirmed “cancer had been present.”
