Is ‘Despicable Me 4’ Appropriate For Children? Here’s What Parents Should Know

Following

Despicable Me 4 is now playing in movie theaters just in time for the Fourth of July. If you plan to watch the sixth film in Universal’s beloved franchise with the entire family, including any little ones, you might have concerns about whether Despicable Me 4 is appropriate for kids.

In the sequel, released on July 3, Steve Carell returns to voice Gru. The story follows the former supervillain, his wife Lucy, and their daughters — Margo, Edith, and Agnes — as they welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr. Meanwhile, “Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina, and the family is forced to go on the run,” according to the synopsis. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned when their new neighbor, Poppy, recognizes Gru.

Since the first Despicable Me film debuted in 2010, the franchise has been popular and well-received by children. The Minions’ silly and mischievous antics, paired with the film’s colorful animation, do an excellent job of keeping kids entertained and visually engaged. The movies also offer a perfect mix of humor, emotion, and creativity, making them a fun watch for the entire family.

What Is Despicable Me 4 Rated?

Despicable Me 4 has a PG rating because of action and rude humor. The PG rating means “parental guidance suggested," and some of the film’s content may not be suitable for all children.

Is Despicable Me 4 Appropriate For Kids?

Despicable Me 4 is a family-friendly movie that most kids will love. It contains slapstick humor and action that are suitable for younger viewers, but there is some comic violence that some parents may want to know about.

The previous three Despicable Me films and two Minions spinoffs were also rated PG, so if you were comfortable with the mildly rude humor and funny action scenes in those films, this one would be no different. As with other children's movies, there is subtle humor geared toward adults that will go right over the kids' heads.

MovieGuide notes that there is no foul language in Despicable Me 4, but a "baby goat poops little pellets," and is there "lots of strong and light slapstick cartoon." The action scenes feature comic violence, such as characters shooting one another with a pellet gun, characters hitting one another, and objects falling on the characters.

Here are some other examples of comical violence in the film, according to the Australian parenting site Raising Children.

  • Two minions repeatedly slap another minion on the bottom.
  • Acid begins to burn through the scalp of a character, who soon has a huge bald patch.
  • Gru accidentally drives his car onto the footpath and into construction workers.
  • A man’s bag is stolen, and another character is hit in the face by a piece of metal pipe.
  • Gru punches Maxime in the face. Maxime falls off the building and hits a lot of things on his way to the ground, knocking out some teeth in the process.

How Long Is Despicable Me 4?

The Despicable Me 4 has a run time of 1 hour and 35 minutes.

Does Despicable Me 4 Have a Post-Credits Scene?

Yes, Despicable Me 4 has a post-credits scene that you and your kids will want to stay in your seats for. While the extra ending doesn’t tease another sequel in the animated franchise, the brief after-credits scene is filled with Minion fun and shenanigans.
