Inside Out 2 put its mind to the test at the domestic box office this weekend to become the second-biggest Disney-Pixar opening ever behind Incredibles 2.

According to Deadline, the sequel to the 2015 Best Animated Feature Oscar winner Inside Out roared out of the gate for a mind-blowing estimated take of $155 million take over the three-day weekend. With another $140 million in international ticket sales, Inside Out 2 earned an estimated $295 million at the worldwide box office in its debut weekend.

The biggest Disney-Pixar opening at the domestic box office came in 2018 as Incredibles 2 made $182.6 million.

The box office tally also earns Inside Out 2 the second-highest opening for an animated film ever at the domestic box office behind Incredibles 2. Before the release of Inside Out 2 this weekend, the animated blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. held the No. 2 spot with a $146.3 million opening in North American theaters in 2023.

According to Box Office Mojo, Incredibles 2 is still the top-earning Disney-Pixar movie of all time at the domestic box office with a lifetime gross of $608.5 million. Finding Dory is No. 2 at $486.2 million, followed by Toy Story 4 ($434 million) and Toy Story 3 ($415 million). The original Inside Out rounds out the Disney-Pixar top five with an all-time domestic take of $356.4 million.

Per Box Office Mojo, Inside Out also earned $501.9 million in international ticket sales for a worldwide tally of $858.8 million against a $175 million budget.

Inside Out 2 reintroduces audiences to Riley (voice of Kensington Tallman), whose story in the 2015 original was told from the point of view of five emotions in her mind, also known as her Headquarters. The emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust and Fear—projected Riley’s feelings through a console in the young girl’s Headquarters as she adjusted to a big change in her life.

In the new film, Riley’s Headquarters are renovated as she turns 13 and puberty hits. As such, four new emotions—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui (which means boredom)—move in and suppress Riley’s core emotions. Joy is especially troubled by this, so she and her fellow emotions fight to prevent Anxiety from controlling Riley’s life.

Amy Poehler returns as the voice of Joy in Inside Out 2, while new voice cast members joining the sequel include Maya Hawke as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri as Envy.

According to The Numbers, Inside Out 2 opened in 4,400 theaters on Friday.
