The Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black—a box office bust in theaters—is coming to streaming.
Back to Black recounts the life and career of Rehab hitmaker, who died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011, at age 27.
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring Marisa Abela as Winehouse, Back to Black was released in North American theaters on May 17.
According to streaming tracker When to Stream, Back to Black will begin streaming on NBC Universal’s subscription streaming service Peacock TV on July 5.
If viewers don’t subscribe to Peacock TV, Back to Black is available to purchase for $24.99 or rent for $19.99 for a 48-hour period via premium video on demand on such digital streaming platforms as Prime Video, AppleTV+ and VUDU.
How Did ‘Back To Black’ Do In Theaters?
The official logline for Back to Black reads, “The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame from her early days in Camden through the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black that catapulted Winehouse to global fame.
“Told through Amy’s eyes and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film explores and embraces the many layers of the iconic artist and the tumultuous love story at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
Back to Black opened with $2.8 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend in 2,010 North American theaters. According to box office tracker The Numbers, Back to Black ended its domestic theatrical run with $6.15 million in ticket sales.
The film also earned $27.98 million overseas for a worldwide box tally of $34.1 million, per The Numbers. Box Office Mojo, however, reports that Back to Black made $44.3 million internationally, which boosts its worldwide box office to $50.4 million.
The Movie Database reported that the production budget for Back to Black was $30 million before prints and advertising.
Back to Black was roasted by Rotten Tomatoes critics, who collectively gave the film a 33% “rotten” rating based on 174 reviews. RT users, on the other hand, gave the Winehouse biopic a “fresh” 86% Audience Score based on 100-plus verified ratings.
