Gru and the Minions are back with Despicable Me 4, starring the voice of Steve Carell. Is there an end credits scene to indicate more Despicable adventures are on the way?

Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me kicked off the successful animated movie franchise in 2010, where the heart of the evil genius Gru softens by the end of the film as he adopts a trio of young sisters—Margo, Edith and Agnes —from a group home.

The film also introduces Gru’s yellow pill-shaped henchmen the Minions (voiced by Pierre Coffin), who are constantly jibber-jabbering with each other as they get into one mess after the next.

ForbesWhen Will 'Despicable Me 4' Be Coming To Streaming?

Having turned the page in his evil ways in the next pair of Despicable Me movies, Gru is now a top agent with the Anti-Villain League in Despicable Me 4. His latest big bust is of an old schoolmate, Maxime (Will Ferrell), who has managed to harness the power of cockroaches and make himself a weaponized insect.

Stung over the AVL agent thwarting his dastardly plans, Maxime vows to break out of prison and exact revenge on Gru, his daughters, his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), and their new baby, Gru Jr. Delivering on his promise, the incarcerated supervillain escapes from his maximum-security confines and partners with his wife, Valentina (Sofía Vergara) to search for Gru and his family.

Just to play it safe Gru and his family relocate to a safe house and change their identities.

However, when a neighbor girl and supervillain wannabe, Poppy Prescott (Joey King), recognizes Gru, she promises not to reveal his identity if he helps her on a big heist. Gru has no choice but to take the risk, even though it means that he can be located by Maxime.

What Do The End Credits Tell Us About More ‘Despicable’ Adventures?

While Gru, Lucy and their family move into their safe house, they only take three Minions with them to help out with Gru Jr. Meanwhile, the rest of the Minions are moved to the Anti-Villain League headquarters under the supervision of AVL chief Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan).

During their stay, Silas gets five of the Minions to voluntarily take a serum that will turn them into superheroes. Now formally called the Mega Minions, at least two of the team members gain powers akin to Marvel’s Fantastic Four, as one has elastic powers (a la Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic) and another has a stone-like appearance like Ben Grimm/The Thing.

ForbesDoes 'A Quiet Place: Day One' Have An End Credits Scene?

So, does Despicable Me 4 have an end credits scene? Yes and no. There is no narrative scene to set up another Despicable Me movie, but mayhem breaks out during the first part of the end credits as the Mega Minions and regular Minions find themselves in a variety of short scenarios.

As such, we see Minions either playing around with AVL lab equipment, taking boxing lessons or hanging around the stone-textured Mega Minion as he lifts weights. For the rest of the credits, another Mega Minion—who has a cone-shaped head, wears a cape and has the ability to fly—darts around on both sides of screen until the very last frame.

When the last credit appears, a Minion who has a gadget that fires Lite Brite-like pegs shoots the plastic projectiles at the flying Mega Minion. It’s a bookend reference of sorts, since the same Minion kicks off Despicable Me 4 by shooting pegs out of the gadget to create the Illumination Entertainment logo.

So, while end credits don’t tell us anything about another Despicable Me chapter, it doesn’t really need to. In fact, the idea of another Despicable Me or Minions movie coming to theaters is all but a formality because its a multibillion-dollar franchise that shows no signs of slowing down.

According to The Numbers, the Despicable Me franchise (which included the two Minions movies) has made more than $4.6 billion to date. The release of Despicable Me 4 will only make the juggernaut grow in size.

Deadline reports that Despicable Me 4 is tracking to make $110 million to $120 million in its five-day opening over the long 4th of July weekend in domestic theaters, which begins when the film opens Wednesday.

On top of that, Deadline noted that Despicable Me is tracking to make another $75 million to $80 million in ticket sales internationally. If the domestic and international estimates hold, Despicable Me 4 could potentially cross $200 million at the worldwide box office by Sunday.

So, while the end credits aren’t substantive and don’t point to any sequels, they’re fun to watch anyway simply because the Minions are endlessly entertaining characters. If the gargantuan combined take of Despicable Me and Minions films since 2010 tells us anything, moviegoers simply can’t get enough of Gru and his hilarious henchmen.
