MaXXXine—an A24 film starring Mia Goth and directed by Ti West—is new in theaters. How soon is it coming to streaming?
Set in Hollywood in 1985, MaXXXine is the last chapter in actor/producer Goth and filmmaker West’s X horror film trilogy following X and Pearl. It tells the story of porn star Maxine Minx (Goth), who breaks into the commercial film world when director Elizabeth Bender (Elizabeth Debicki) casts her in the horror movie The Puritan II.
The tension is high in Los Angeles as the infamous (and real-life serial killer) the Night Stalker is on a killing spree. Since the most recent murders happened in her orbit, a pair of LA detectives (Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan) on the Night Stalker case begin to question Maxine about the victims. If the detectives get too close with their questioning, though, it could lead to revelations of Maxine’s murderous past.
Right now the only way you can see MaXXXine is in theaters, so check your local listings.
When MaXXXine premieres on streaming it will be on Max. Per IndieWire, A24 signed a multiyear deal with the Warner Bros. Discovery’s subscription streaming service to ensure all of A24’s film titles would debut on Max.
The streaming video on demand date for MaXXXine, however, is yet to be announced. As such, the first way to see MaXXXine online after its theatrical premiere Friday will be on digital streaming via premium video on demand.
PVOD titles are generally available to purchase for $24.99 or $19.99 for a 48-hour rental period once a viewer starts watching the film. Prime Video, AppleTV+, Google Play and VUDU are among the digital platforms that offer PVOD titles for purchase or rent.
How Soon Will ‘MaXXXine’ Be Available On Digital Streaming?
Like any movie that is released in theaters, a film’s PVOD or streaming service release generally depends on how well it does at the box office.
So, the best way to determine when a film will premiere on PVOD is to go by the pattern of previous titles. As for A24, the studio’s hit dystopian drama Civil War opened in theaters on April 12 and debuted on digital streaming on May 24.
If MaXXXine has the same type of six-week widow separating its theatrical and PVOD release, then viewers can expect to either rent or purchase the movie on digital streaming as soon as the middle of August.
A potential SVOD premiere date for MaXXXine on Max is a bit more iffy. A date for Civil War’s premiere on Max has not yet been announced, which indicates it may take 90 days or more before it hits the streamer.
On the other hand, A24’s Priscilla Presley biopic Priscilla had a much faster track on the PVOD and SVOD front. Priscilla debuted in limited release in theaters on October 27 and expanded its release on November 3.
Like Civil War—but not including its week in limited release—Priscilla had about a six-week window between its theatrical debut and release on digital streaming run on PVOD, which began on on December 15, 2023.
Nearly 60 days later on February 23, Priscilla made its SVOD premiere on Max.
Also starring Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, Moses Sumney and Kevin Bacon, MaXXXine opens in theaters on Friday.
