Topline

A new documentary will feature former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in Georgia, the BBC announced Friday, as a trial has likely been delayed until after the November election amid the defense’s effort to disqualify Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Key Facts

The documentary, “State of Georgia v. Donald J. Trump,” is produced by London-based 72 Films and BAFTA-winning director Marian Mohamed, the BBC said, though a release date has not been announced.

The 90-minute film features “unprecedented access to the case,” according to the release.

“State of Georgia v. Donald J. Trump” includes stories about the employee who recorded Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s phone call with Trump, who urged Raffensperger to “find” votes to swing the state in his favor in 2020, and the “suburban candle maker” who became the foreperson in the grand jury that indicted Trump, among others.

Surprising Fact

The BBC commissioned a documentary series about Trump’s presidency, “The Trump Show,” that aired in late 2020. The series covered events and controversies during each year of Trump’s presidency, including his impeachment trial, the Covid pandemic, his claims about election fraud and the January 6 attack on the Capitol. It featured interviews with some of Trump’s friends and advisers, including Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon and John Bolton.

Key Background

Trump and 18 co-defendants were indicted in Georgia last August for their roles in an alleged effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state. Several of Trump’s co-defendants accepted plea agreements and pleaded guilty, though the former president has pleaded not guilty to 10 felony charges, including a violation of the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The Georgia Court of Appeals halted the case last week, delaying a possible trial until a ruling is made on whether Willis could prosecute it. Trump has argued Willis should be disqualified because of a relationship she had with prosecutor Nathan Wade. A disqualification hearing for Willis has been scheduled for October, which likely delays Trump’s case until after the Nov. 8 election.

Tangent

Trump was convicted of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records last month, following a yearslong investigation into a hush-money scheme involving Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He also faces charges in Florida for mishandling classified documents and federal charges for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. In Florida, Judge Aileen Cannon scheduled a few hearings in Trump’s case for later this month, likely delaying a trial.
