Ice Spice
After a standout year that included several top-10 singles and a debut EP, Bronx-bred rapper Ice Spice has been laying the groundwork for her debut album Y2K. She first gave a taste of the forthcoming LP last fall with the Rema collab “Pretty Girl” and kicked off this year with the single “Think U the S**t (Fart).” Now, the “Barbie World” MC is back with “Gimmie a Light,” the latest piece of the new album.
With “Gimmie a Light,” longtime Ice Spice producer RiotUSA flips Sean Paul’s 2001 hit single “Gimme the Light” into a Bronx drill beat. “Hot boxin' the V, like, give me a light / Fat a** so the pants fit tight / Took her man, I'm gettin' him right / Big knock, like, why would I fight?” she raps on the track.
Ice Spice is riding a wave of momentum heading into Y2K’s release. After her breakout in 2022, she spent much of last year in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, whether that be for her Nicki Minaj collaborations “Princess Diana” and “Barbie World” or her appearance on the remix of Taylor Swift’s “Karma” and PinkPantheress’ “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2.” She also accompanied fellow hit rapper Doja Cat on her Scarlet Tour last year and just made her Coachella debut last month.
When speaking about the upcoming project with the Today show earlier this year, the Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree teased that Y2K will include sounds that she hasn’t experimented with before in addition to the “familiar sound and aura” that her fans are used to.
“It’s definitely gonna be a drill album,” she said. “But I have a lot of different-sounding beats that I haven’t really been heard on much, so I’m excited for those more than anything. I really want to know what my fans think about these new-sounding songs.”
