Sia Snatches Her First Number One Hit With 'Cheap Thrills'

Finally, after more than a month with the same man and his collaborators running the show, the Hot 100 has a new leader. Australian singer-songwriter Sia has reached the peak of the singles ranking for the first time in her career as an artist with her latest hit, “Cheap Thrills.” The song is taken from her album This Is Acting, which debuted at number four earlier this year in the States. The track was an instant fan favorite, and the singer released a single version featuring a verse by rapper Sean Paul, which is the tune that is currently at number one here in America.

"Thrills" marks the first time Sia has seen her own name in the number one position, but she has occupied the space as a songwriter, thanks to her work on Rihanna's "Diamonds." This is the fourth time that Sean Paul has made it to the top of the Hot 100, following a string of hits in the early 2000's: "Get Busy," "Temperature," and Beyoncé's "Baby Boy," though the past decade has been fairly quiet for him.

Sia’s ascension pushes Drake’s “One Dance” down one peg after 10 nonconsecutive weeks at the summit. The Views single originally made it to No. 1 back in May, and it has ruled for every week since...except for the one frame when Drake and the single's featured artists WizKid and Kyla stepped aside to allow Justin Timberlake to debut in the top spot with his new smash “Can’t Stop The Feeling!”

Following Sia’s lead, Calvin Harris and Rihanna also continue to climb, lifting from number four to number three this week with their global hit “This Is What You Came For.” Behind that powerful duo is Timberlake’s Trolls soundtrack cut “Feeling!,” which seems like it won’t get a chance to recapture the throne after initially beginning its charting life in the position.

The Chainsmokers and Daya are non-movers at number five with their hit “Don’t Let Me Down,” which is the second top ten for the production duo and the first for the up-and-coming pop singer. Alternative rock/hip-hop pairing Twenty One Pilots are also stationary with “Ride,” the most recent single from the group’s number one album Blurryface. Continuing the trend of staying still, Rihanna’s other charting hit at the moment, “Needed Me,” has remained at number seven for some time, and it’s still there this week.

Hip-hop controls positions eight and nine, which are held by Kent Jones’ “Don’t Mind” and Desiigner’s “Panda,” respectively. Adele’s latest top ten hit “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” is in last place, and it appears it probably won’t grow much further from No. 10.
