People living in the New York Tri-State area are always captivated by the magic of Manhattan's world-class dining, entertainment, and cultural attractions. But fighting crowds and public transportation woes? Not so magical.
Thompson Central Park New York is not just a hotel. It’s an oasis, a home away from home that offers an ideal base for a relaxing weekend or midweek staycation in the city.
Location, Location, Location (and Easy Breezy Arrival)
Forget the stress of navigating traffic. Thompson Central Park’s main entrance is perfectly situated on West 56th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, and valet service offers a stress-free arrival (Guests can also enter the hotel from the public arcade of 57th Street).
The hotel is just a short walk from Central Park's lush greenery and a few blocks from Billionaire’s Row, with its pencil-thin, sky-high residential towers. This prime location offers easy access to lively entertainment venues (including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Broadway theaters), immersive museums (including the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Arts and Design), trendy restaurants, and The Shops at Columbus Circle.
After a hotel valet parks their car and whisks their bags inside, guests can explore the rest of the city outfitted with comfy walking shoes and ride-hailing apps (like Uber or Lyft). Or, they can hop on the 57th-Seventh Avenue subway just around the corner.
A Hotel Steeped In History
People may have known the hotel from its previous lives before its transformation.
The hotel was called the Great Northern Hotel before its purchase in 1981 by the Jack Parker Corp, a subsidiary of Air France), who renamed it the Hotel Parker Meridien New York.
The hotel was sold again in 2018 and renamed Parker New York Hotel. After a closure during the pandemic and a major renovation, the Thompson Central Park New York re-opened in 2021 under the Hyatt umbrella.
Spacious Guest Rooms and Public Spaces
Thompson Central Park New York is a gem with updated and redesigned guestrooms, suites, and public spaces with a music-centric theme.
The property has 587 stylish rooms and suites with different views and at various price points. All the rooms are spacious by NYC standards and tastefully decorated with contemporary furniture and soothing colors.
Stonehill Taylor designed the guest rooms, and Thomas Juul-Hansen designed the public spaces. The hotel's artwork pays homage to its location and history, creating a unique and immersive experience for guests.
The pet-friendly hotel has a fitness center and meeting facilities that can accommodate up to 140 people.
The Upper Stories
The Upper Stories, a luxurious 'hotel within a hotel' concept introduced in 2022, is an exclusive enclave on the hotel’s upper floors, 26 through 33.
These accommodations offer a private check-in experience, access to an assigned concierge, and exclusive in-room perks, including Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryers, Nespresso Vertuo coffee makers, and Victrola Bluetooth Radio.
On the third floor, the inviting Upper Stories Lounge (the first one introduced by the Thompson Hotels lifestyle brand) offers a “third place” with comfortable seating to unwind and meet fellow travelers.
Here, guests can grab a quick buffet breakfast or light bites and beverages throughout the day. (Specialty coffees, teas, and soft drinks are complimentary; alcoholic beverages are available at an extra charge.) In addition to two wide-screen TVs, the lounge has a Victrola Listening Lounge with a collection of vinyl records.
In addition to the cloud-like beds with Frette linens, another captivating feature of Upper Stories guest rooms is the breathtaking views of the park. The hotel is just two blocks south of Central Park, and many rooms showcase the treetops' ever-changing beauty.
Places To Dine
If you’re hungry, you won’t need to leave the hotel. In addition to in-room dining, Thompson Hotel Central Park offers three attractive on-site dining venues.
Parker’s, the hotel’s lobby lounge and skylit restaurant, has 36-foot-high ceilings covered with greenery. The artwork on the walls celebrates jazz through photography. The all-day menu at Parker’s offers starters, shareable dishes, New York-inspired entrees, and the option of prix-fixe three-course lunch and dinners. On Thursday nights, guests can enjoy craft cocktails with live music.
Hidden behind a red velvet curtain in the lobby is the legendary Burger Joint, a casual eatery that debuted in 2002 in the Parker Meridian. The menu features juicy hamburgers, cheeseburgers, plant-based burgers, chicken and cheese sandwiches, and more.
Finally, if you want a taste of New York City’s authentic ethnic cuisine, Indian Accent offers a contemporary approach to traditional Indian fare and features an extensive wine list.
