Topline

A man was arrested after threatening to "blow himself up" near the Iranian embassy in Paris Friday, Reuters reported, leading police to cordon off the area around the building, which is just across the Seine river from the Eiffel Tower.

Key Facts

French radio station Europe 1 first reported on X, formerly known as Twitter, that a man in a building near the consulate had made the threat.

The man was carrying what appeared to be a grenade and explosive vest when he entered the embassy, Reuters reported.

Police have asked people to avoid the area and service was interrupted on a nearby metro line.

Several witnesses reportedly told Le Parisien, a newspaper, that the man had dragged flags on the floor of the embassy and said he wanted to avenge the death of his brother, whose identity is unknown.
