Real Madrid Now Wants To Renew Player’s Contract, Reports MARCA

Following

Real Madrid now wants to renew the contract of a player it was previously suspected could be put on the transfer market according to MARCA, which cited anonymous sources.

Ferland Mendy was bought from Lyon as a long-term successor to club legend Marcelo in 2019.

Indeed, the Frenchman sped up the Brazilian's exit which caused the winner of the joint-most trophies in Madrid history to return to his hometown club Fluminense after a pit stop in Greece when Los Blancos lifted the Champions League at Liverpool's expense in 2022.

Marcelo is happy back in Rio de Janeiro after helping 'Flu' seal its maiden Copa Libertadores, which is South America's answer to the UCL, last year.

He remains linked to Madrid, though, after his teenage son Enzo penned a contract extension for the La Fabrica academy this week, and Mendy could follow him in this sense.

With Mendy previously failing to nail down the left back spot and make it is own thanks to a series of injuries, it was suspected that he would be put on the transfer market this summer.

As his current terms expire on June 30, 2025, the upcoming window would theoretically be the last that a considerable sum of money can be made on 28-year-old, who reportedly has interest from Saudi Arabia and the Premier Premier League.

The once expected, immediate arrival of Alphonso Davies also spelled bad news for his future at the Bernabeu.

The Canada international has an identical contract situation to Mendy at Bayern Munich, but interest in him has cooled off because Madrid will prioritize a center back ahead of next term according to Relevo.

Madrid could still sign Davies for free 14 months from now, but until then Mendy might extend his stay in the Spanish capital.

This term, he is on course to equal the most appearances he has made in a season, 38, while currently on 33 outings under Carlo Ancelotti - who has called him the best left back in the world.

Many pundits and fans feel that Davies holds that title, meaning that Madrid could be blessed with potentially boasting both him and Mendy from the 2025/2026 season onwards.
