Topline

Ex-NBA player Glen “Big Baby” Davis was sentenced to 40 months in prison Thursday, months after he and several former NBA players were convicted of defrauding the league’s healthcare plan out of millions of dollars.

Key Facts

U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni sentenced Davis, 38, to 40 months in prison in addition to three years of supervised release, his attorney Sabrina Shroff said Thursday.

Davis was found guilty of healthcare fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to make false statements and conspiracy to commit healthcare and wire fraud in November.

He was ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution.

Prosecutors said Davis submitted $132,000 worth of bogus insurance claims over at least four years, including a $27,200 claim for dental work at a Beverly Hills dental office in 2018 while he was actually in Las Vegas, allegedly flying to Paris the same day, USA Today reported.

Key Background

Davis, who last played in the NBA during the 2014-15 season as a Los Angeles Clipper, is one of 18 former NBA players convicted in the healthcare fraud case. The players were charged in 2021, after federal prosecutors said they allegedly submitted nearly $4 million in fraudulent reimbursement claims for medical services they never received. The scheme centered on the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan, which provides healthcare benefits to current and former NBA players and their spouses. Will Bynum was sentenced to 18 months in prison last month, while former guards Sebastian Telfair, Darius Miles and Tony Allen each avoided prison sentences. Terrence Williams, who played for four NBA franchises between 2009 and 2013, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August after admitting to leading the scheme between 2017 and 2021. He was also ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution.

Tangent

Davis, known for his charismatic personality on and off the court, was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2007 after leading LSU to the Final Four a year earlier. He won an NBA Championship with the franchise in 2008 and later played for the Orlando Magic and Clippers.
