Methodology

Using our online comparison tool, we ran quotes for worldwide single trip policies for Bali.

Our research is based on a trip for a family of four (two adults, both aged in their forties and two teenagers) on a 14-day trip.

We’ve assumed no members of the family have any pre-existing medical conditions.

All policies include at least £2 million in medical and repatriation cover and £2,000 in cancellation cover, which both extend to Covid-related risks. They also offer a minimum of £1,500 in baggage and belongings cover.

We ranked each policy on the following factors:

  • Price: The premium (one-off payment) charged for cover
  • Excess: The amount deducted from any successful claims payout. (Some policies charge an excess for each person named on the policy while others charge it only once).
  • Excess waiver: Whether policyholders were offered the option to waive the excess levied on claims by paying an additional premium.

The scores for each policy were totalled, and converted to Forbes Advisor star ratings out of a potential five stars.

What is travel insurance for Bali?

A policy for Bali typically covers countries worldwide, excluding the USA, and surrounding destinations, such as Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Insurers also offer two other main type of policy which cover:

  • Europe
  • Worldwide destinations (including the USA and surrounding destinations)

A policy for Europe tends to be the cheapest, while worldwide cover, particularly if it includes the USA and surrounding destinations, usually works out the most expensive, accounting for higher medical costs in this part of the world.

Do I need travel insurance for Bali?

While taking out travel insurance is not a requirement when visiting Bali, it can provide peace of mind.

As with all types of travel insurance, a policy for Bali covers emergency medical costs should you fall ill or get injured while away and trip cancellation, if something unexpected, such as illness or bereavement, causes you to cancel your holiday.

It also can cover lost or stolen baggage and belongings and personal liability should the policyholder injure someone else, or damage another’s property, and face legal proceedings and the threat of being sued.

What types of travel insurance for Bali are there?

There are three main types of policy to choose from:

  • Single trip policy: designed for a one-off trip
  • Annual multi-trip policy: if you are going away more than once within the space of 12 months
  • Long-stay/Backpacker policy: for a getaway lasting more than 31 days typically. It provides cover for up to 60 or 90 days or 12 or 18 months (and occasionally up to 24 months), depending on the provider.

An annual multi-trip policy can work out more cost-effective than purchasing a single trip policy each time you go away, but not always. It therefore can help to compare both types of policy.

What does travel insurance for Bali cover?

In addition to the above, travel insurance for Bali can cover any number of the following:

  • Travel delay: provides an inconvenience benefit up to a pre-specified amount if the booked outward or return journey is delayed for a set period of time (typically 12 hours) after checking-in
  • Missed departure: covers the cost of additional accommodation and travel should an emergency cause the policyholder to miss their journey
  • Scheduled airline failure: protects the policyholder if the airline they’ve booked with goes bankrupt
  • End supplier failure: protects the policyholder if a hotel, travel company or airline goes into administration
  • Loss of passport: helps cover the cost of replacing a passport and travel documentation, if they are lost or stolen
  • Personal money: the amount that can be claimed if the policyholder’s money is lost or stolen
  • Personal accident: covers an accident resulting in personal injury or death
  • Legal expenses: covers legal fees for an incident that wasn’t the policyholder’s fault
  • Hospital benefit: covers the cost of necessities such as food and drink while the policyholder is in hospital
  • Gadget cover: pays out if items such as the policyholder’s laptop or mobile are lost or stolen.

Does travel insurance for Bali cover sports and activities?

Yes, in fact, it’s common for a policy to cover 50 to 100 low-risk sports and activities as standard. These usually include jogging, cycling and trekking.

Cover for more high-risk activities, such as scootering, quad biking and snorkelling may be available as an optional extra, at an additional cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does travel insurance for Bali exclude?

It is important to read through a policy’s small print to find out its specific limitations and exclusions on cover, as these can differ between policies.

However, generally, insurers typically do not accept claims where the policyholder has travelled to a destination when the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has advised against all, or all but essential travel there.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept a claim based on the policyholder deciding they no longer wish to travel. This is termed ‘disinclination to travel’ and is not deemed a valid reason for making a cancellation claim.

Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour, and intoxication from drink or drugs, will likely be rejected too, and sports-related claims where the policyholder did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet or harness.

What else should I consider when comparing policies?

While price is a key consideration when shopping for a policy, there are other factors to take into account too. For example, the cover levels of the policy you choose should meet your requirements.

This includes the cancellation cover, which should cover the cost of your holiday, and the baggage and belongings cover, which should cover the value of the items you are taking away with you. Note that there is often a total baggage cover limit, as well as a cap on how much you can claim per item.

Also look out for the amount the policy levies in excess. This is the set portion of each accepted claim that you must pay. There is no payment to make, as the excess amount will be deducted from the value of the pay-out. However, cheaper policies usually levy more in excess, while more expensive policies levy less.

What is a GHIC?

The Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) entitles cardholders to emergency treatment on the same terms as locals in European countries. It is not for use in Bali.

The same applies to its predecessor, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If still valid, it can only be used in Europe.

When should I take out travel insurance for Bali?

It is better to take out travel insurance for Bali as soon as you book your holiday, as cover for trip cancellation will start immediately.

Insurers are unlikely to accept cancellation claims resulting from something that happened before the policy was purchased.

How can I compare travel insurance policies for Bali?

An online comparison tool will allow you to easily make side-by-side comparisons of policies for Bali.

First, you will need to enter a few details about yourself and your trip, such as your age and your holiday destination and duration.

It will then show you the cheapest quotes based on your requirements.
