If exorbitant gas prices haven’t pushed you to go electric, several Earth Day promotions might encourage the switch.

Earth Day is Friday (April 22) and public charging networks around the country are offering discounts at Level 2 and 3 stations and for charging at home to raise awareness about the environment and sustainability. Electrification alone isn’t reversing climate change or completely eliminating carbon emissions, but it is encouraging more renewable energy use.

To show how EVs align with the purpose of Earth Day, charging network ChargePoint calculated how much its EV drivers have saved over the years using the company’s plugs. It comes out to 608,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

EV users have saved 44 million pounds of carbon on Volta’s free charging network, according to the company.

Charge At A Discount

To celebrate Earth Day, Electrify America is offering free Level 3 (sometimes called ultra-fast) charging starting at 12:01 a.m. ET Friday through 3 a.m. ET Saturday. The free “fill up” is available at its 740 stations scattered across the U.S.

EVgo will offer 2,000 EVgo rewards points to all customers who charge anytime on Friday. That converts to $10 of EVgo credit, which is enough for a typical charging session.

Electrify America sells a Level 2 home charging system, which will knock off $50 through April 30 with the promo code CHARGEONEARTH.

Everyday Should Be Earth Day

While some EV owners might feel like driving on battery power means celebrating Earth Day every day, Friday is the big day. Volkswagen is hosting a weekend-long New York City event at the Hudson Yards, while an EV club in Hawaii is sponsoring free electric test drives. VW’s NYC event will have its electric ID. Public utility companies, local governments and clean energy associations are supporting EV events all month with many drives and demos planned for Earth Day and the weekend.

Even when it’s not Earth Day, most car makers offer discounted and free charging programs for new EV sales. All 2022 new Volvo electric purchases include 250 kWh of free fast and Level 2 charging on Electrify America plugs, as does Hyundai.

While Kia offers 1,000 kWh on the network, Volkswagen ID. 4 owners have three years of free, unlimited charging with Electrify America. Toyota has teamed up with ChargePoint for its charging program and other EV makers like Audi and Porsche also provide new owners free juice.

For EV owners, Earth Day discounts abound—all year long.
