The second SUV for the Polestar EV brand makes its debut with a coupe-like sloped roof and improved performance. Polestar

The newest Polestar electric vehicle made its debut at the Auto Shanghai show Monday night: the Polestar 4.

Following the existing Polestar 2 and planned Polestar 3 SUV, the 4 will be a smaller SUV between the two. With a sleeker roofline, the 4 is the fastest Polestar yet with a zero-to-60 mph time of under 3.8 seconds and bringing in 544 horsepower from the motors on the dual long range version. It’s also based on the concept Precept with familiar shapes and cues from the Polestar 2, 3 and soon-to-come 5.

There will be dual- and single-motor versions, like the Polestar 2, with AWD or rear-wheel drive, respectively. The 102 kWh battery has 544 hp and 506 pound-feet of torque. On the single motor expect 272 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. Range is targeting over 300 miles.

The fast-charging compatible EV will have bidirectional charging, so you’ll be able to charge devices and equipment with the 4.

A sloping roof makes the SUV more coupe-like and a smaller ute than the upcoming Polestar 3. Polestar

Another SUV, But with More

Adding to the growing Polestar family means another SUV, but this time a smaller coupe style with a 118-inch wheelbase (190 inches overall) on parent company Geely’s Sustainable Experience Architecture platform. This makes for an expansive interior with reclining seats. (The Polestar 2 is just under 108 inches and overall 181.3 inches, while the Polestar 3 is a similar length and almost 3 inches longer overall.)

A full-length glass roof comes standard with option electrochromic glass that can be switched from opaque to transparent.  There’s no rear window, just an extension of the roof. New colors expand the existing Polestar playlist with Storm and Electron for exterior paint and a new Mist interior.

The familiar Google-based interface powers the 15.4-inch touchscreen. Polestar

Thoughtful Interior

Low-carbon materials are incorporated into the vehicle, especially with Polestar’s focus on a lower carbon footprint for each of its vehicles. Again Polestar is using mono-materials to make for easier recycling. A new material for the 4 includes a tailored knit from recycled polyester that was shown in the Precept concept.

Interior carpets are from recycled plastics and fishing nets. Door trim panels are from recycling plastics and MicroTech (also in the Polestar 3) is a bio-based vinyl that uses pine oil instead of crude oil.

Tech-wise, Polestar’s partnership with Google continues with a built-in Google-based infotainment system, on the 15.4 touchscreen. Safety features come with a standard 12 camera, 12 ultrasonic sensor and radar system. A driver monitoring camera detects sleepy or distracted drivers. A head-up display is also standard.

First coming to China, the Polestar 4 falls between the Polestar 2 and 3. It will make its way to the U.S. in 2024. Polestar

How Much will the Polestar 4 Cost? When will it be Available?

The Polestar 4 is expected to start around $60,000 when it arrives in the U.S. in 2024. It will first launch in China with production starting at the Geely-owned plant in Hangzhou Bay, China in November.

Like other Polestars, the 4 will offer Plus (comfort and tech upgrades) and Pilot packs (Pilot Assist with advanced driver assistance from Mobileye and lane change automatic assistance added) with extras. A Plus Pro Pack includes the opacity-changing glass roof and other interior lighting. The Nappa Pack adds Nappa leather with comfort features like massaging seats. A Performance Pack includes 22-inch wheels, performance chassis tuning and gold details.

The Polestar 2 starts at $48,400 for the 2023 model year, while the Polestar 3 is expected to start around $84,000. The 4 will slot in between in both size and price.

The Polestar 4 will be on display at the Shanghai auto show along with the Polestar 3 and the updated 2024 Polestar 2.
