An aerodynamic fastback sedan joins the Volkswagen electric lineup as the ID.7. Volkswagen

The camouflage is off on Volkswagen’s newest electric vehicle, the ID.7.

First teased ahead of the CES electronics show in early January, the next fully electric option from VW was revealed Monday. The fastback sedan will be first available in Europe, then China and finally make its way to the U.S. in 2024.

The Next ID for North America

The 7 follows the success of the compact SUV ID.4 and will be the second fully electric option from the German automaker in the U.S (and the first electric sedan). The sedan will launch in Europe with two versions: the 77 kWh battery Pro and 86 kWh battery Pro S, each with a motor and capable of fast charging up to 170 and 200 kW, respectively.

The bigger battery version is projected to have up to 435 miles of battery range, while the smaller up to 382. Both will offer 282 horsepower.

It will feature an 86 kWh battery on the VW MEB (modular electric drive matrix) electric platform, which is bigger than the largest battery pack on the ID.4.

The ID.Aero concept sedan was unveiled last year in China and is the basis for the newest ID option. That concept sported an aerodynamic design on the front and roof that helped boost its estimated range to more than 430 miles. The ID.7 has that same range-saving design with the sloped roof that gives it a .23 drag coefficient. It’ll have a 116.8-inch wheelbase making it a midsize sedan, close in length to the Tesla Model S or Lucid Air but decidedly less luxurious.

The ID.7 is mainly going after Hyundai’s electric sporty sedan, the Ioniq 6, but there still aren’t many electrified sedan competitors in the non-luxury space. The new sedan follows the success of the e-Golf, VW’s electrified Golf hatchback, which saw sales peak in 2019 before it was axed to make way for ID.3 and ID.4 production in Europe in 2020.

AI as Standard

The interior experience brings tech to the forefront with a smart panoramic sunroof that switches to opaque or transparent, voice control throughout, advanced driver assistance with new features such as Travel Assist for assisted lane changes during highway driving, adaptive climate control for the front seats and a standard AR head-up display.

The new AR head-up display gives more information to the driver by projecting a digital layer over the real world, such as a turn arrow onto the street when navigation says to turn left.

The neat and organized front panel features optional ambient lighting and a 15-inch infotainment system with natural language voice control. Smart air vents provide a better cooling and heating pattern and are responsive to voice commands. It’s also comfy upfront with new ergoComfort seats with massage and 10 air cushions that hit pressure points. The seats can also be adjusted 14 ways, and the climate settings automatically adapt to the temperature and moisture in the cabin.

How Much Will the VW ID.7 Cost? When Will it be Available?

The ID.7 will be made at VW’s Emden plant in Germany and make its way to North America dealerships in 2024 after deliveries in Europe and China later this year.

VW hasn’t revealed pricing for the e-sedan for U.S. customers, but the ID.4 starts under $40,000. Its non-electric Jetta GLI starts at just over $31,000 and the Arteon at $42,000. European pricing is expected later Monday.

VW plans to launch 10 new electric cars in the next three years. Its “ID” deliveries hit 500,000 globally since the smaller Europe-based ID.3 arrived in September 2020. The ID.4 followed shortly in the U.S. Next the ID.7 will make its way to U.S. shores.
