39 Top New SPFs Of 2024 To Keep Skin Safe And Healthy

Updated May 28, 2024, 08:26pm EDT

We know you’ve heard it before, but it’s worth repeating: Sunscreen should be worn every single day, no matter the weather. That’s because it’s truly the best anti-ager out there. “SPF (Sun Protection Factor) helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause sunburn, premature aging and skin cancer,” says Celebrity Esthetician Ian Michael Crumm. “UV rays are present even on cloudy days or in winter when it’s cold outside, so daily protection is essential. Regular use of SPF can prevent sunspots and discoloration, wrinkles and other signs of skin aging.”

While the best sunscreen for you is one that you’ll actually wear, Crumm recommends looking for a formula that checks off a few boxes. “Choose a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection to shield against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays,” he says. “For everyday use, a minimum of SPF 30 is recommended. For prolonged outdoor activities, aim to use SPF 50+. If you’re swimming or sweating, look for water-resistant options.”

When choosing the best sunscreen, it's also helpful to keep your skin type in mind, such as non-comedogenic for oily or acne-prone skin, fragrance-free for sensitive skin or moisturizing ingredients for dry skin. “Choose a formula that matches your skin’s needs,” Crumm says. “Many new formulations have skincare benefits that go beyond sun protection added into them. For instance, many utilize hyaluronic acid for skin-plumping, niacinamide to calm inflamed skin and ceramides to condition the skin barrier. Sunscreens should state what skin types are best suited for each so look out for those descriptions to determine the best sunscreens start experimenting with.”

Finding the right formula often comes down to trial and error. “Everyone’s skin is different, and we all have our own preferences, so using sample sizes can help test how a product feels and reacts with your skin,” Crumm says. “It’s easy to want to stop trying sunscreens after a horrible experience like a white cast residue, but please prevail and keep trying other SPFs until you find the one right for you.” When in doubt, you can always get professional advice by consulting an esthetician or dermatologist, especially if you have specific skin concerns.

To make the most of your sunscreen, applying enough is key. “Apply a liberal amount of sunscreen to all exposed skin, including often-missed spots like the ears, back of the neck and tops of feet,” Crumm says. “Follow the two-finger rule for the face: Use the pointer and middle fingers to measure out two lines of sunscreen. This should be an appropriate amount to cover the face. Add an additional finger length of SPF to cover the neck area.”

Be sure to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating. It’s also important to apply it properly during skincare layering. “Apply sunscreen as the last step in your skincare routine before makeup,” Crumm says. “Remember to use sunscreen daily, regardless of the season or weather conditions. Gradual sun exposure over time is cumulative and can cause serious skin aging and lead to skin cancer.”

These are the best new SPFs of 2024 to keep your skin protected and healthy.

Franz Skincare Naked Sunshine Peptide Patch

A go-to for Crumm, who works with the brand, these super thin and breathable sun patches block 99.9% of UV-B and 98.1% of UV-A rays. “For athletes and people outside for extended periods, it’s very easy to forget to reapply,” he says. “People often unconsciously wipe around the eye area between reapplications due to sweat when being active, which minimizes protection and can fastly lead to skin burning and skin discoloration, specifically around the eye area. The Franz Naked SunShield Peptide Patch is a solution to protecting the eye area for an extended period. It is ultra-thin, water- and sweat-resistant, and can last all day to protect against UV rays. It’s a fantastic product for our sun safety toolkits as the thin design makes it transparent on the skin, and after five minutes, you can barely notice any sensorial feel. It attaches and moves with the skin with ease. I also love recommending them to clients battling skin discoloration that easily comes back with a bit of UV exposure.” $25, franzskincareusa.com
