Why We Picked It

If you had to pick one tire to ride over every type of off-road terrain, the BFG MT is where it’s at. The original version of this tire (KM1) was tricky on wet paved roads, but the KM2 and KM3 versions of this tire now have additional sipes in the treads making it a surprisingly compliant tire in most driving scenarios. (Sipes are the very small creases that allow water to move away from the actual part of the tire that touches the road.) It lacks the “classic” look of the older Mud Terrains, but more than makes up for it with some of the best performance on this list including highly improved grip over rocks.

Pros & Cons
Why We Picked It

The MT/R has a cool-looking tread pattern that serves a purpose. The complex combination of treads and sipes is designed to get you out of some seriously muddy conditions. The Kevlar construction means these tires are incredibly durable over rocks and resistant to punctures. This is a great all-around off-road tire with exceptional mud performance. The big surprise is that it handles well on paved roads. The ride is rough, but it provides solid grip when you’re not on the trail.

Sometimes you just want the old reliable. The “Swampers” are a go-to for veterans of the trail. They don’t have the modern advancements of other tires, but they make up for it with a known tread pattern that four-wheelers have been using for decades. The massive treads and spaces are meant for paddling their way through even the deepest mud and dirt. They have poor on-road performance and are noisy, but that sound and the aggressive look are often exactly why 4×4 owners want them.

Pros & Cons
Why We Picked It

The ideal off-road tire is one that provides performance in all facets of the trail, without detracting from the place you’ll be most of the time—on paved roads. Dry performance is usually fine for most off-road tires, but the ability to mitigate slipping in the wet? That’s like a superpower for a mud-terrain tire. The Hankook Dynapro MT2 has numerous sipes that can channel water away from the contact patches (the actual part of the tire that touches the road).

Let’s face it, tires are expensive. With mounting, you are looking at well over a thousand dollars for many of the options out there. So why not go for a more affordable tire that is also great in places other than the trail? Not only is the price right on the Cooper Evolution, but this tire provides solid grip in the snow and in the summer. As the name suggests, this is a mud-terrain tire for all seasons.
