Polestar 3 Overview

The Polestar 3 SUV is the latest model to be announced by the manufacturer as it ramps up operations to expand its global footprint. Information about (and photos of) the newest Polestar has been slowly trickling out before the official debut and full reveal of the 3 on Oct. 12.

The maker’s first SUV, Polestar says the 3 will launch with a dual-motor setup and a large battery capable of providing over 372 miles of range. Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO, states, “With this car, we bring the ‘sport’ back to the SUV, staying true to our performance roots.”

An optional Performance Pack boosts the 3 to 510 horsepower with 671 pound-feet of torque. Gold accents on the valve caps, seat belts and on a interior light adorn the performance version. Standard equipment includes an adaptive dual-chamber air suspension system and dampers that will switch between “comfort” and “firm” suspension on the road with adjustments every 2 milliseconds.

Eager to embrace autonomy, Polestar says, “the Polestar 3 will, over time, offer autonomous highway piloting powered by the best-in-class lidar sensor from Luminar and centralized NVIDIA computing power.”  Zenseact and Smart Eye will also provide safety and AI features.

Polestar as a brand has set its sights on expansion and plans to launch a new car every year for the next three years, starting with Polestar 3. Additionally, it plans to grow ten-fold from global sales of approximately 29,000 in 2021 to approximately 290,000 by the end of 2025. To achieve this, the maker hopes to increase its presence to at least 30 global markets by the end of 2023.

“Polestar 3 will be built in America, for our American customers,” said  Ingenlath, referring to Volvo’s new plant in South Carolina where it will be assembled. “From now on, the USA is no longer an export market but a home market.”

The Polestar 4, a smaller electric coupe is slated to follow the 3 in late 2023. The Polestar 5, an electric performance 4-door GT is scheduled for a 2024 launch. The production evolution of the Polestar Precept concept car that Polestar released in 2020, it will embrace the brand’s future vision in terms of design, technology, and sustainability as embodied by the concept.

When Will the Polestar 3 be Available?

Ordering for the Polestar 3 will coincide with the model’s official debut at 1 p.m. ET on Oct. 12. Production is expected to begin in early 2023 in both the U.S. and China.

How Much Will the Polestar 3 Cost?

While Polestar hasn’t revealed any pricing information, Ingenlath, refers to the Polestar 3 as a “high-end large luxury EV, with a strong, individual brand character.” Given that hint, and the fact the current Polestar 2 sedan dual motor starts around $51,900, it’s a good bet the 3 will arrive with a slightly higher price attached. For the sake of comparison, the Ford Mustang Mach-E starts at $46,895, the Tesla Model Y at $65,990, the Audi e-tron at $70,800 and the BMW iX at $84,100. While we don’t know exactly where the Polestar 3 will land in terms of size and power, the sampling at least gives an idea of the lower and upper limits for the segment, and we suspect the price will hew to the higher end of the scale.
