Hollywood Bowl Home In Venice, California Makes Sustainability Chic

Following

Like a sculptor, an architect must have an extensive understanding of the material. For renowned architect David Hertz, this understanding not only encompasses a material’s aesthetic qualities but also its environmental impact. As a prominent figure in sustainable architecture, Hertz’s selections are often recycled—sourced from airplanes, refrigerators or, in the case of this $8-million Venice home, a Los Angeles landmark: the Hollywood Bowl.

Known as the Hollywood Bowl Home, the 7,100-square-foot residence is sided with reclaimed Alaskan cedar from the original benches at the historic amphitheater. “The story of the property is quite amazing,” says David Kramer, president of Hilton & Hyland, who shares the listing with colleague Ruby Fay. ”Hertz found a way to make hundred-year-old wood feel entirely modern.”

The beachside home has more than one Hollywood connection; True Blood actors Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer have owned the property since 2009.

Originally a cottage, duplex and an adjoining vacant lot, Hertz was brought in to wed all three into a single estate. Construction was completed in 2017, and the result is a refined, contemporary home that oozes style.

A towering, two-story pivoting door makes for a dramatic entrance and is flanked by bifolding walls of glass. Many more movable walls can be found throughout the three-story home, welcoming in light, breezes and sounds of the ocean, which sits a block away. Skylights also open, furthering the light and airy vibe.

Polished concrete floors spread across the first story, giving a sleek, modern feel to living spaces that include a dining room, bar and sitting area with built-in bookshelves.

Bedrooms make up the second level, some featuring walk-in closets and fireplaces.

Perched on the top floor, an open-concept living room, green leather banquette dining area and sleek kitchen extend to a rooftop deck with panoramic ocean views.

Privacy with an outdoor setting is afforded other living spaces, like a second-story courtyard and a swimming pool and spa tucked away beneath an overhang. Wellness amenities include a Zen garden, sauna and fitness center.

A separate guesthouse sits on the property thanks to a little creative engineering, says Kramer. “There was a cottage on the lot before the current home. Instead of tearing the cottage down, it was picked up and placed on top of the garage.”

Nestled between Venice Beach and the Venice Canals, the double-lot property offers easy access to some of the city’s most desirable amenities.
