2021 Audi Q3
The styling on the Audi Q3 is sharp and youthful and reminiscent of the Q8, is the brand’s very expensive and well-equipped flagship SUV.  Audi

In a crossover-crazy world, Audi stands apart from other premium brands with high style, tech- heavy and feature-loaded offerings. It’s entry-level Q3 compact SUV is no exception, and for its third year in its second generation, the subcompact crossover gets a new base four-cylinder engine and a streamlined trim level setup.

Audi did away with the top-end Prestige trim for 2021, instead funneling that model’s features into options packages that can now be added to the Premium and Premium Plus trims. More standard features also were added across the board, which gives buyers a more well-appointed Premium trim.

Buyers shopping in the premium compact crossover segment that care about looks and driving engagement will likely cross-shop the Q3 against the BMW X1, Acura RDX and Volvo XC40. At 176.6 inches long, the Q3 sits mid-pack among rivals in terms of rear cargo space (23.7 cubic-feet) as well as front (40 inches) and backseat legroom (36 inches). The Acura RDX is the longest of the bunch (186.7 inches) and therefore bests the group in cargo and passenger space. But the entire set prioritizes performance while at the same time providing more versatility compared with a sport sedan.

For 2021, Audi streamlined the Q3 lineup, leaving only the Premium and Premium Plus trims, and added an engine, which can be added to either trim.  Audi

2021 Audi Q3 Performance

Both the Premium and Premium Plus trim can be equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that either makes 184 horsepower (the “40”) or 228 (the “45”). With only two trims, Premium and Premium Plus, buyers can opt for one of four configurations. All models use an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

On the road, the Q3 is not as quick off the line as its competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW, but things improve considerably once it works its way through the turbo lag. Audi quotes a 7 second sprint to 60 for Q3s equipped with the 45, though the compact crossover feels quicker than that figure reads on paper. The eight-speed automatic does a good job of keeping the engine in its power band to optimize performance and shifts quickly and smoothly.

The Q3 excels in regions that see swings in weather (like all Audis). Even over the rough late-winter roads in Northern New England, the Q3 maintained its composure. The crossover’s suspension system handled all but the worst potholes and broken pavement, which is superior than many in its class. As expected from a sporty Audi, the Q3 holds its own on curvy roads and manages quite a fun ride overall.

Audis do well in regions that have snowfall or rain because of the (mostly) standard Quattro all-wheel drive and proficient suspension. The Q3 is no exception.  Audi

2021 Audi Q3 Comfort & Convenience

Audi made many improvements inside, including a revised driving position that allows for a more comfortable and ergonomic setting for even taller drivers. The front seats are supportive and comfortable. In back, however, the Q3’s compact dimensions show their colors. Headroom is acceptable for all but the tallest people, but legroom is tight. The lack of also makes hard work of installing a rear-facing seat behind a tall front passenger. Those looking for something more family-friendly should consider the larger Q5 or three-row Q7.

The 2021 Q3 is a tech lover’s dream. Though optional, Audi’s digital cockpit is exceptional, and allows for the display of maps and other vital information directly behind the steering wheel—and in the driver’s line of sight. Both the standard 8.8-inch and the optional 10.1-inch touchscreens run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger center unit is bright and colorful but its placement can feel a little low.

The Audi Q3 comes with an impressive amount of standard safety tech. For the 2022 model year, the brand will make even more of it standard.  Audi

2021 Audi Q3 Safety Systems

The Q3 scored well in all crashworthiness categories in testing by the IIHS but did not receive a Top Safety Pick rating for the 2021 model year. NHTSA gave it a five-star overall rating. Its list of standard safety features includes forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection (Pre-Sense front), lane departure warnings and automatic high beams. Audi also includes its Pre-Sense basic, which tightens the seat belts, closes the windows and sunroof. Adaptive cruise control with stop and go capability and Side Assist (blind spot monitoring) is available on higher trim levels.
