BMW X2 Overview
The BMW X2 is a sporty, stylish crossover with an engaging powertrain and an upscale interior. Closely related to the boxier X1, it offers a stylish fastback hatch with prominent haunches. Still, it’s in a bit of an awkward spot in the crossover world, as it’s sportier than most of its competition and offers less usable interior space than its X1 crossover sibling. (Specifically, the X2 offers 21.6 cubic-feet of cargo space to the X1’s 27.1; with the rear seat folded flat, the numbers increase to 50.1 and 58.7, respectively.) BMW does, however, realize this and offers the X2 in a red-hot M35i configuration that bumps engine output to 302 horsepower and pushes the 0-60 mph time below five seconds.
Mechanically, the X2 is identical to the X1 in that it comes standard with a turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine that produces 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission handles the gear swaps. Also similar to the X1, BMW offers the X2 in both front- and all-wheel drive formats, the latter requiring a $2,000 upcharge on the automaker’s order sheet.
Despite its in-between positioning and a tight back seat, the X2 saw solid sales numbers in 2018 and 2019 before a brutal 2020 knocked it to just under 7,400 units sold.
