About BMW

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG—better known as BMW—is one of Germany’s premier luxury auto manufacturers, and throughout the company’s existence, it has given America some of the most interesting and highest-performing vehicles yet. It’s part of a bigger conglomerate known as the BMW Group, which includes Rolls-Royce Motor Cars and MINI.

BMW’s origins are not solely rooted in automotive, as its founding dates back to Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, or BFW, an airplane motor manufacturer that started in 1916. The name Bayerische Motoren Werke was established in 1917, five years before it purchased a BFW plant. BMW started off building motorcycles with the launch of the boxer-engined R32. In 1932, it made its first in-house-developed automobile, the 3/20 PS. Despite massive hardships tied to World War II, BMW ultimately emerged as one of the biggest luxury players in the market.

The 1956 Isetta microcar was the first BMW imported to the U.S. although BMW did not establish its North America operations until 1975. The creation of BMW North America aligned with the opening of its first dealership opened in the U.S., which launched the new 3 Series sedan to the American market in 1977.

Today, BMW is has expanded its lineup to 16 different nameplates. It offers sedans, crossovers, wagons, SUVs, coupes, convertibles and electrics that serve a variety of consumers. Its reputation for building some of the most enthusiast-focused vehicles on the market has taken a sizeable hit throughout the past decade, but its confident engines and balanced chassis tuning will continue to entice customers.
