Chevrolet Equinox Overview

Introduced on the 2016 Autumnal Equinox, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox hit showrooms mid-year 2017. Restyled in Chevrolet’s familiar design language, the new 2020 Equinox continues to offer a pleasing blend of space and efficiency in a compact SUV.

The base turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder is rated for 170 horsepower, but buyers looking for more oomph underfoot can opt for the available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 250-horsepower.

The interior is cozy and functional but is a little light on pizazz. Standard tech includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, USB connectivity, and an auxiliary input jack. GM’s 4G LTE–powered onboard Wi-Fi is also standard (data plan required), giving parents a tool to help their children fend off boredom on extended drives. Awarded a 5-star rating for both frontal and side collisions and equipped with a full suite of standard active safety features and six-standard airbags, the Equinox deserves to be on the shopping list of anyone in the market for compact SUV.

Trim Specifications

The L, LS, and LT trims are tightly grouped in price and features. Notable standard equipment includes cruise control, keyless entry, pushbutton start, power windows and locks, steering wheel-mounted controls and numerous active safety features.

The L forgoes a genuine spare tire and wheel, instead substituting a tire inflator kit. The LT trim adds an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, SiriusXM satellite radio, tinted rear windows, body-colored exterior mirror caps and few additional cosmetic tweaks.

The Premier edition includes a hands-free automatic tailgate, chrome roof rails, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and ambient interior lighting, among its many standard features.
Adding four-wheel drive is $1600 on all trims.

Chevrolet Equinox Generations

First Generation

2005 to 2009
Launched in 2004 as a 1005 model, the first-gen Chevrolet Equinox shared a platform with the Pontiac Torrent, Saturn Vue and Suzuki XL7. A 3.4-liter V6 and five-speed automatic transmission were the sole powertrain at launch, but 3.8-liter V6 and six-speed automatic joined the lineup in 2008.

Second Generation

2010 to 2017
The second-generation 2010 Chevrolet Equinox arrived in showrooms in mid-2009. Featuring a beefed-up structure, a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines, and entirely new styling, the second-generation Equinox proved to be popular with buyers, far surpassing the sales of the previous model. A mild exterior and interior refresh arrived for the 2016 model year.

Third Generation

2018 to Present
The current third-gen Equinox went on sale in 2017 as a 2018 model. Initially, the two gasoline engines were accompanied by a 1.6-liter diesel, but it was dropped at the end of the 2019 model year due to low demand.
