The GMC Hummer EV SUV is an all-new electric SUV. This is the second vehicle from the revived Hummer brand with seating for five in a truly massive vehicle. It’s available in a range of four well-equipped trims with a long list of features including CrabWalk for off-roading diagonally around terrain and an Infinity Roof with removable Sky Panels. It’s very off-road capable, but it comes at a high price with limited availability.

There are four trims of the Hummer EV SUV. The base EV2 and EV2X both have up to 625 horsepower while the EV3X and Edition 1 jump to 830 horsepower. Pricing starts at about $80,000 and tops out over $100,000, but there’s a caveat. The Edition 1 is completely sold out while the rest of the lineup is sold out for now. GMC is taking orders for future deliveries, but dates are uncertain as is pricing so think of the above numbers as a guide only.

This is a new segment with increasing competition, but for now, the Hummer EV SUV is something of a unicorn. It’s a huge, off-road electric SUV with two rows while most competitors are smaller and not as off-road capable. The Rivian R1S is the closest as a large three-row electric with off-road capability. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a two-row electric SUV with more of a road performance focus. There’s also the two-row Mercedes-Benz EQB electric with a luxurious interior and a refined ride, but a lack of off-road capability.

The Hummer EV SUV doesn’t have much competition. Other electric SUVs aren’t as expansive, luxurious and off-road capable.  GMC

Base trims have up to 625 horsepower with two electric motors while top trims add a third motor for 830 horsepower. There’s also Watts to Freedom (WTF), which is basically a launch control system for use on closed courses only. Range is good with anywhere from 250 to 300 miles per charge depending on the trim. Specialized off-road features include CrabWalk, which allows for diagonal driving, and Extract Mode to help navigate more challenging terrain.

There’s a good balance between on-road manners and off-road capability, which is one of this vehicle’s strengths along with its performance figures. The interior is quiet and comfortable with a smooth ride ideal for longer trips. It also has a glass Infinity Roof made of four Sky Panels that can be removed on the fly and stowed in the frunk (front trunk) for an open-air drive.

The Hummer EV SUV excels at off-roading, but it’s also loaded with tech. There’s a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with crisp graphics and great cut-scenes as you move through the drive modes. It’s also equipped with General Motors’ Super Cruise hands-free driving technology that functions on over 200,000 miles of highway in North America. There are other options for anyone seeking an electric vehicle, but the GMC Hummer EV SUV is unashamedly unique.

Performance: 14/15

The two base versions of the GMC Hummer EV SUV have up to 625 horsepower with 7,400 pound-feet of torque along with two electric motors. Top trims get an extra motor for up to 830 horsepower with 11,500 lb-ft of torque and three electric motors. There’s plenty of power no matter which trim you choose with aggressive acceleration. Find yourself a closed course and try Watts to Freedom (WTF), which is basically launch control. It takes you from zero-to-60 mph in a cool 3.5 seconds, pressing you back in your seat and plastering a smile on your face.

Heading off-road, there are drive modes that tailor vehicle systems to everything from rocks to mud. There’s also CrabWalk, which uses four-wheel steering to move the Hummer EV SUV sideways. It makes traversing narrow spots in such a large vehicle easier, especially off-road. There’s also Extract Mode, which is another helpful off-road feature that raises the ride height by about 6 inches. Whether its rocks, tree limbs, water, or even the snowbank at the end of a driveway, that extra height gets through it all. Only the Rivian R1S offers competitive off-roading as an electric SUV.

Range, Energy Use & Charging: 10/15

The EV SUV has not been rated by the EPA, but we do have estimated range figures from GMC. Base trims have a range of up to 250 miles per charge while top trims can get up to 300 miles per charge. That’s more than enough to get through the average day without needing to stop and top off the battery. A Level 2 charger adds roughly 30 miles of range per hour. Use a DC fast charger and it adds 100 miles in 14 minutes. That can take the battery from 10 to 80% in about 55 minutes.

The R1S gets up to 321 miles of range, which puts it slightly ahead of the Hummer EV, but not by much. The Mustang Mach-E tops out at 270 miles while the EQB comes in even lower with 243 miles. This makes the Hummer EV SUV a good choice for those who put a priority on range, especially in its top trims.

But when it comes to battery efficiency, the Hummer struggles. The EPA doesn’t have official MPGe numbers for the SUV, but the truck version fails with its 47 MPGe combined rating (51 city, 43 highway). The most similar R1S electric SUV with 20-inch wheels gets 64 MPGe combined, which isn’t great, but in comparison to Hummer it’s an efficiency machine.

Safety & Driver Assistance Tech: 8/15

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV has not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has a negative impact on its safety score despite its safety features.

Safety features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and other alerts. There’s also Super Cruise handsfree driver assistance technology from parent company GM. This works on over 200,000 miles of road in North America. It keeps the vehicle in its lane, adjusts the preset speed as needed with the flow of traffic and can even initiate a lane change. It still requires the driver’s attention, but it’s a fantastic feature for avoiding driver fatigue, especially on a lengthy road trip. Ford’s Blue Cruise and Rivian’s Driver+ offer similar functionality, but Super Cruise is smoother and more natural.

Backseat passengers are treated to one of the more spacious back rows of any SUV, especially since most vehicles of this size squeeze in a third row.  GMC

Comfort & Room: 15/15

The Hummer EV SUV is huge on the outside and those dimensions give it a cavernous interior. There’s plenty of room for five adults with headroom and legroom galore. This makes it especially suited to long road trips with a full crew as everyone has all the room they need to stretch out. There’s 38.9 cubic feet of rear legroom with 38.6 cubic feet of headroom. The Rivian R1S has less legroom but more headroom, but it does offer an optional third row that you can’t get in the Hummer EV SUV. The Mach-E has less room on both counts while the EQB offers a bit more rear headroom.

This is a luxury SUV, but it’s not a delicate one. Materials are premium, but durable enough to stand up to off-roading. Nothing is small with oversized grab handles and large trims. It matches with the outside of the Hummer EV SUV perfectly. Seating is comfortable with minimal bolstering and good support for longer drives. There’s also good storage for smaller items with a large center console bin and deep door pockets.

Infotainment: 15/15

Standard infotainment includes a 13.4-inch touchscreen mounted horizontally on the dashboard and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. There’s smartphone connectivity with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as wireless device charging. Multiple USB ports ensure everyone along for the ride stays charged. The front screen shows 14 different camera views so you can easily navigate off-road terrain. The Android-based system is powered by Unreal Engine, which is what’s used to create video game graphics. GMC made good use of this technology with immersive cut-scenes as you flip through the drive modes.

Music comes courtesy of a 14-speaker Bose surround sound system that’s standard across the lineup. It produces rich sound that easily fills the cabin. Pay special attention to the speaker grilles. Rather than a random pattern, the grilles are topographical maps of real locations on the moon. Look closely at the driver’s side grille and there’s a small astronaut boot print. There’s also Bose EVSE technology that creates a special propulsion sound based on the noise of the electric motors.

If you want to pack it, there’s room. The Hummer EV SUV opens up to more than 80 cubic-feet for cargo.  GMC

Cargo Space & Storage: 13/15

There’s plenty of room for cargo in the Hummer EV SUV. If it’s small items, there’s a large center console that can hold even small totes. Door pockets are also generous and include spots for holding larger water bottles. The area where the wireless charging is housed can manage a smartphone and still have room for a wallet or small items like keys.

If it’s larger cargo, then there’s ample room in the back along with a floor mat to protect the carpeted surface from dirt and debris. Fold the rear seats down and there’s a total of 81.8 cubic-feet of cargo room. That’s more than both the Mach-E and EQB, but it falls short of the R1S, which has 88.3 cubic-feet behind the front seats. Additionally, there’s a frunk with 11.3 cubic-feet of room. It perfectly holds the removal Sky Panels, but you can use it for whatever you choose. It also closes automatically with the key fob, unlike most frunks that require a manual heave. Likewise, there’s a power swing door for the tailgate that opens and closes via a button just above the rear bumper.

Style & Design: 8/10

The Hummer EV SUV has a unique design. While other electric vehicles aim for something sleek and futuristic, this EV is the opposite. Everything about it is large with a somewhat blocky design and aggressive styling. This is not a vehicle that will go unnoticed and it’s sure to attract plenty of attention. It’s a statement vehicle for both its size and the fact that it’s an EV with gas-guzzling roots. Its high price puts it firmly in luxury territory.

That bold exterior design is matched by what’s inside, and it works. Nothing is too fancy or delicate. Instead there are large knobs and huge grab handles with the same blocky exterior design. It’s a well-conceived package and it’s especially appropriate for an SUV with this kind of rugged off-road capability. The Hummer of old, in all its gas-guzzling glory, had a commanding presence. It makes sense that this reinvented Hummer has the same bold style, just with a modern electric powertrain beneath the surface.

This is Hummer reimagined as an EV, so if the big, bulky, militaristic look isn’t your aesthetic the luxury touches won’t cover it up—even if it is all-electric.   GMC

Is the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV Worth it? Which Hummer EV SUV is the Best Value?

There are other options for those who want an electric vehicle, but the Hummer EV SUV is unique in the field. Off-road capability like this is not the norm in the segment. The Rivian R1S steps up as a solid competitor, but other electric SUVs don’t even try. Instead, you have to forgo the electric lifestyle and opt for a gas engine. That’s going to change in the coming months, but for now, the Hummer EV SUV sits almost unchallenged.

There’s room for five with a spacious and attractive interior that features durable materials that can handle the rigors of off-roading. It has the features to manage rough terrain whether rocks or mud or sand and boasts impressive technology from infotainment to safety features.

No matter the trim, this is an expensive proposition. As it’s currently sold out, pricing is likely to move upward for those who plan to order one for future delivery. We’d aim for the EV2X as the best value since it has higher range ratings and adds DC fast-charging, two key features. The GMC Hummer EV SUV is an impressive electric SUV with off-road capability enthusiasts will love.

How Much Does it Cost to Insure the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV?

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV will be an expensive car to insure based on the first Hummer EV pickup. The SUV is still too new, but we estimate a typical 30-year-old female driver with a clean record to average an annual premium around $4,800. A Rivian R1S owner might pay around $4,000 per year, while the Mercedes-Benz EQB is $2,600 and the smaller Ford Mustang Mach-E up to $2,817.
