GMC Acadia Overview

Slotted in the middle of GMC’s SUV lineup, between the Yukon and Terrain, the 2nd generation Acadia is more refined than its predecessor, offering driver-assist safety packages, premium interior materials and an off-road package. The styling typically hews to the understated side of the street, but the new AT4 off-road and top-tier Denali trims let a personailty show through.

Engine choices include a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6. All three engines pair with a new nine-speed automatic. If you don’t have the budget for the full-sized Yukon but you’ve got GMC on the brain, the Acadia is a big enough step-up from the Terrain to consider it as a viable contender in the popular mid-size three-row segment.

Trim Specifications

Both the base SL and SLE trims rely on the 193-horsepower 2.0-liter four for motivation, get keyless entry and pushbutton start, automatic climate control and an eight-inch infotainment screen with six-speaker audio.

The SLT moves up to the new 230-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine and 18-inch aluminum wheels to replace the SL’s 17-inch rollers. Further SLT enhancements include heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a Bose eight-speaker audio system and navigation for the infotainment system.

The new AT4 package includes the 3.6-liter V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission that comes in the Denali, exclusive 17-inch all-terrain tires and a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system with GMC’s Traction Select System with off-road mode. An AT4 grille and black chrome details finish off the look.

Along with a more lavish interior, the Denali gets 20-inch wheels, a hands-free liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats and an automatic heated steering wheel, and a slew of standard driver-assist and safety aids, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert with pedestrian detection and automatic braking.

GMC Acadia Generations

First Generation

2007 to 2017
The Acadia marked the introduction of GMC’s first vehicle not to be based on a truck chassis. Although it is a three-row passenger vehicle, it was brought in to be a more compact and affordable version of the Yukon.

Second Generation

2018 to Present
The current, second-gen GMC Acadia debuted for the 2018 model year. Shorter and lighter than its predecessor by 7.2-inches and nearly 700 pounds, maximum passenger count was reduced to seven from eight. The second-gen Acadia adopted GMC’s new familial styling direction and theme that was continued with the 2020 mild refresh. A new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and pushbutton gear shift arrived for 2020.
