Toyota 86 Overview

The 2020 Toyota 86 is a sleekly designed coupe with a long hood and short deck like many sports cars. It’s twin counterpart to the Subaru BRZ and is powered by the same rear-wheel drive 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the base 86 trim. It also features sport-tuned suspension and Torsen limited slip differential. A new trim, the Hakone Edition, named for a famed racetrack in Japan, boasts exclusive green paint, 17-inch bronze wheels and black and tan seats. The 86 can also get the TRD treatment with exclusive rear badging, Brembo ventilated disc brakes, Sachs dampers and 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Overall the 86 offers speed and nimble handling as well as practicality, a combination that bests rivals lacking daily-driving competence.

Trim Specifications

The base 86 trim has a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, dual chrome-tipped exhaust, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls and a six-speed manual transmission. The six-speed automatic is a $720 upgrade. Adding the TRD package is $2,320 and is only available with the manual transmission. The 86 GT adds a matte-clack rear wing, leather and heated front seats, a 4.2-inch information display, a smart key system with push button start, dual zone automatic climate control and a standard six-speed transmission with dynamic rev management and paddle shifters. When configured with a manual transmission, the TRD package costs $1,270 on the GT. The new 86 Hakone Edition features the exclusive Hakone green color, 17-inch bronze wheels, sport bucket seats with Black Alacantra and tan leather-trimmed seats, black and tan sliding armrest and a standard six-speed manual transmission.
