Audi A5 Overview

The Audi A5 offers buyers a choice of three distinct body styles: a two-door coupe, a Cabriolet and a Sportback (a four-door hatchback with a fastback-style roofline). While the trend is to apply the “coupe” moniker to any vehicle with a rakish backlight regardless of door-count, Audi commendably refers to its four-door A5 and A7 models as Sportbacks.

Redesigned for the 2018 model year, the A5 and performance-oriented S5 versions receive just mild updates for 2020, adding new side sills and tailpipes, and widening its front grille. The Coupe, Cabriolet and 4-door Sportback are all available in A5 spec with a turbocharged 248-horsepower four-cylinder mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or S5 spec with a twin-turbo 349-horsepower V6 and an eight-speed automatic.

The high-performance RS 5 variant, however, is a coupe only proposition. With its menacing styling and twin-turbo 444-horsepower 2.9-liter V6, eight-speed automatic transmission and the same torque-vectoring sports differential used in the S5, the RS 5 coupe hits 60mph in a claimed 3.7 seconds. Audi knows its market here, offering a wide range of RS5 customization options, both cosmetic and performance-enhancing, including a carbon-fiber roof and beefier carbon-ceramic brakes. Audi hasn’t revealed any major details for the 2021 model year, we don’t expect any earthshaking changes.

Trim Specifications

The base Premium trim comes with 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/40 series all-season tires, three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto and more.

The Premium Plus trim adds 8-way adjustable front seating, with leather surfaces, navigation, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit configurable instrument panel, keyless entry and pushbutton start, and a few additional minor items.

Prestige adds a head-up display,  adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist (stop and go capability in traffic jams), parking system plus with top view camera and park steering assist, a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the full suite of safety technologies.

The coupe-only RS 5 commands over $15,000 more than the S5 Prestige but brings a bevy of mechanical and tech items for the upcharge, including 19-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels with 265/35 performance tires, full LED lighting, headlamp washers and a gloss-black rear spoiler. Interior upgrades include a  unique RS suspension to keep the chassis planted, a flat-bottom steering wheel with RS insignia and power-adjustable front sport seats with massage..

Audi A5 Generations

First Generation

2007 to 2016
Audi’s A5 was introduced in 2007 as a luxury coupe, with a 3.2-liter FSI V-6 mated to the company’s new quattro permanent all-wheel-drive system (with a front-wheel drive option arriving in 2010). Based on Audi’s Modular Longitudinal Platform, the A5 boasted improved handling and stability by positioning its powertrain behind the car’s front axle. While Audi added a range of variants and offshoots during this generation, including a Sportback, a cabriolet, and the RS5 (joining the S5, the original performance-boosted A5), the model’s first major refresh came in 2013. Bodywork upgrades included redesigned headlights and tail lamps, and the A5 got new driver-assist features and infotainment options.

Second Generation

2017 to Present
The current generation A5 came with more aggressive bodywork, including a redesigned single-frame grille, as well as a retuned chassis, five-link rear suspension, and a choice between two TFSI 2.0-liter gas engines and a 2.0-or 3.0-liter diesel. The new S5 differentiated itself from the A5 with quad exhaust ports, an air diffuser integrated into the rear bumper, and larger rims and side vents. The model’s interiors and suspensions were reworked, but the star upgrade was a new turbocharged 3-liter FSI V-6, with 354 hp (that’s 25 more horses than last generation’s V-6). Along with getting a lower and wider single-frame grille, the current generation RS5 replaced its 7-speed gearbox with an 8-speed, and is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 that loses a handful of horses compared to the previous, naturally aspirated V-8, but gets a boost of more than 120 additional pound-feet of torque.
