Chevrolet Traverse Overview

Redesigned for the 2018 model year with a rugged exterior design that references Chevrolet’s current design ethos, the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse follows up with very few changes. Offering a spacious interior with seating for up to eight, the Traverse SUV offers nearly the same interior space as a minivan and none of the stigma.

A 3.6-liter V6 engine funnels its output through a nine-speed automatic transmission and provides surprising brisk acceleration. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available on all trims but the base L. Although large, the Traverse drives more like a big car than a small truck, a quality sure to be appreciated by busy and easily distracted parents.

Trim Specifications

With so many trim levels, it’s easy to zero in the features without spending too much perusing the a la carte options. The L and LS trim both has a standard 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a Wi-FI hotspot and keyless entry.

LT trim replaces the second-row bench with a pair of captain’s chairs and opens the door to optioning a trailer hitch and upgraded cooling system package. The sporty RS package brings standard 20-inch black-painted aluminum wheels, heated exterior mirrors with body-color caps, fog lamps and a host of active safety features among other niceties. Premier trim adds ventilated front seats, a hands-free liftgate, wireless device charging, and the option of a sunroof. The top-tier High-Country trim adds polished 20-inch wheels and a tow package with a trailer hitch, heavy-duty cooling system, and trailer hitch camera view, adaptive cruise control, and more.

Chevrolet Traverse Generations

First Generation

2009 to 2017
Built on a shared platform with the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia, the first-gen Traverse was far from remarkable but remarkably versatile. Offering room for seven and their gear, a five-star NHSTA safety rating and unoffensive styling, it resonated with families who couldn’t commit to the minivan lifestyle. V6 power and six-speed automatic provided reasonable efficiency. The Traverse received a mild facelift, revised shift mapping and updated infotainment options for the 2013 model year.

Second Generation

2018 to Present
The current, second-generation Chevrolet Traverse debuted as a 2018 model with a 3.5-liter V6 engine paired to an eight-speed transmission. In 2020 a 10-speed transmission replaced the previous eight-speed.
