Volvo V60 Overview

The 2020 Volvo V60 is a five-door station wagon that leans towards the sporty side of the street. Although redesigned just a year ago, the 2020 V60 does see some changes with the addition of the Polestar Engineered T8 eAWD Polestar Plug-in Hybrid variant and the elimination of the higher-output T6 powertrain. That leaves the T5 Turbocharged 250-horsepower front-wheel drive powertrain as the primary source of motivation. The Cross Country trim V60—not to be confused with the more SUV-like XC60 SUV, which is covered separately— gets standard all-wheel drive and approximately 2.7-inches of additional ground clearance and a more compliant suspension. Fuel economy, however, decreases to 31mpg combined from standard V60’s 34mpg combined EPA rating. All V60s use an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The performance-oriented Polestar Engineered plug-in hybrid features the T8 eAWD engine, which is both supercharged and turbocharged. The combined output from its gasoline engine electric motor is 415 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. Regardless of powertrain, the V60 provides traditional station wagon packaging and practicality without the off-road posturing.

Trim Specifications

The primary news in terms of trims and features for the 2020 model year is the elimination of the T6 AWD powertrain and the introduction of the all-wheel drive Cross Country and Polestar Engineered T8 eAWD trims. Standard features across the lineup include a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, navigation, smartphone integration, five drive mode settings, a power tailgate, panoramic sunroof, collision avoidance, lane keep assist, and parking assist.

The Momentum features standard 5-spoke 18-inch wheels, an integrated roof rack, synthetic upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and dual-zone climate control. R-Design upgrades the V60 with leather seating and upholstery, shift paddles, a unique grille and foglamps, four-zone climate control and a Harman Kardon premium audio system among other details. The Inscription is priced similar to the R-Design but favors a refined luxury theme over the R-Design’s sports motif. The means an elegant grille and headlamps, comfort-focused seating and more light-hued interior bits.

The performance-oriented Polestar Engineered T8 eAWD plug-in hybrid features a supercharged and turbocharged engine. Additional standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree camera, a graphical head-up display and premium Bowers and Wilkins audio, among other niceties.

Volvo V60 Generations

First Generation

2015 to 2018
Although launched in Europe in 2010, the V60 did not go on sale in North America until its mid-cycle refresh for the 2015 model year. Essentially a five-door version of the S60 sedan, the V60 is notable for introducing the world’s first pedestrian and cyclist detection system with automatic braking. The V60 Cross Country went on sale in all markets the following year. The North American V60 came a choice of three drivetrains. The T5 FWD featured a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (240 horsepower) paired with an eight-speed automatic. The T5 AWD and T6 AWD both received turbocharged engines mated to six-speed automatics. The former was outfitted with a 2.5-liter five-cylinder (250 horsepower) while the latter was equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder (325 horsepower).

Second Generation

2019 to Present
Introduced in late 2018 as a 2019 model, the current, second-gen V60 wagon continues with mild upgrades.
