Kia Forte Overview

The Forte is one of Kia’s key pillars, and the 2020 model is the sportiest it’s ever been. The car was completely reimagined for the 2019 model year, and with new trims for 2020, it has something for the enthusiast-minded as well as affordable, safe and efficient choices.

The Forte is available with a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter inline-four or a 201-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four. The 2.0 can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission, a rare option these days, or a continuously variable transmission, while the 1.6 can link with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. A tuned suspension and exhaust give the turbo more character, but it’s not a fully hot upgrade. Without a sunroof, the Forte has 96 cu ft of passenger space, and the trunk offers 15.3 cu ft of space.

Trim Specifications

The base-level Forte FE comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but a CVT is available for $900 extra. The same is not the case between the GT and GT Manual, as the GT uses a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the GT Manual is a fully different trim with different equipment. The pricier GT Manual trim adds a 4.2-inch instrument cluster display, a wireless phone charger, an eight-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, a power sunroof, several advanced driver and safety systems, and LED interior lighting. Michelin Pilot Sport 4 summer tires are available on GT and GT Manual for $200.

Kia Forte Generations

First Generation

2010 to 2013
The Forte nameplate debuted for 2010 as a replacement for the outgoing Spectra. With an attractive new design, the Forte was available in three trims. The LX and EX had a 156-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. The SX trim had a 173-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-four that paired with a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. The debut Forte touted 96.8 cu ft of passenger space and 14.7 cu ft of cargo room. Kia also introduced an even sportier two-door Forte Koup for 2010, and a practical four-door hatchback variant debuted for 2011.

Second Generation

2014 to 2018
The Forte debuted longer, lower, and wider with a soft rounded design. The 2014 LX is equipped with a 143-horsepower 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that paired to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while the EX is equipped with a 173-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic. The LX’s standard features include steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power windows, Bluetooth technology, and heated side mirrors. Kia discontinued the Forte Koup after the 2016 model year.

Third Generation

2019 to Present
The current third-gen Forte debuted in 2019 sporting a youthful but upscale exterior inspired by its Stinger sports sedan big brother.
