Kia Sportage Overview

Kia updated and upgraded the Sportage compact SUV for 2020 with restyled looks inside and out, more standard tech, and a choice of either a 181-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the SX Turbo trim; both pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and are offered in either front- or all-wheel drive.

Its exotic styling and upscale interior set it apart in a crowd of androgynous compact SUVs, and its competent driving dynamics sprinkle in some fun. Passenger space comes in at 129.3 cubic-feet ft, and it has 30.7 cubic-feet ft of cargo room behind the rear seats. Fold the rear seats down, and the cargo space nearly doubles to 60.1 cubic-feet, plenty of room for all the luggage or gear required for a weekend getaway.

Trim Specifications

The LX starts things off with 17-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Smartphone Integration and lane keeping and departure warning and automatic braking safety features. The S upgrades include 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, a sport steering wheel with paddle shifters and synthetic leather interior trim. EX trim brings 18-inch alloy wheels with a unique machine finish, keyless entry and push-button start, automatic climate control and heated front seats, among other minor upgrades.

As its name implies, the SX Turbo brings the 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. Additional SX Turbo items include 18-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, leather-trimmed front seats with power adjustability and ventilation and Harmon Kardon audio system.

All-wheel drive is a $1,500 option on all trims except S, for which it is a $1,700 upgrade.

Kia Sportage Safety

Kia Sportage Generations

First Generation

1995 to 2002
The Sportage was the second vehicle Kia launched in the U.S. Based on a rugged existing platform, and it relied on a 139-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder paired with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission for motivation. It was available in rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive versions.

Second Generation

2005 to 2005
Returning for its second run after a short hiatus, the Sportage used a new, less-rugged chassis design as part of its transformation into a mass-market compact SUV. Starting in 2005, it came in two powertrain flavors: 2.0-liter four-cylinder or 2.7-liter V6. A four-wheel drive system was an option. Standard features included power windows, power mirrors, a roof rack, an AM/FM/CD stereo system, and 16-inch wheels. All V6 models have cruise control standard. A 2009 refresh included new looks and more features.

Third Generation

2011 to 2016
The 2011 Sportage debuted a radically different styling direction for the five-seat compact SUV, with a longer, lower, and wider stance. Available in Base, LX, or EX trims, standard features included air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, and power mirrors, and Bluetooth connectivity. A 176-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, and a 270-plus-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is optional. Both pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and are available with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Fourth Generation

2017 to Present
The current, fourth-gen Sportage builds on the previous model’s European looks with new exotic and premium design features inside and out. A stiffer structure and revised suspension reduce NVH and improve handling, and a longer wheelbase and longer body improve interior space. LX and EX trims get a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 181-horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque, while the SX Turbo trim gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four that makes 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The Sportage is the longest-running Kia nameplate in the U.S. marketplace.
