Buick Regal Sportback Overview

The 2020 Regal Sportback comes in a range of trims and two capable powertrains. It’s hatchback and flat-folding rear seats provide enough cargo space to transport bulky items, unlike traditional trunk-laden sedans. The versatile Regal is fun to drive, with zippy acceleration and firm braking. It’s engaging on twisty roads and well-behaved on the highway. The base, Preferred, Essence and top of the line Avenir trims are all powered by a front-wheel-drive 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that delivers 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The Essence can also be configured with AWD, which comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine and an eight-speed automatic that makes 310 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of torque. The GS, also equipped with the 3.6-liter and eight-speed automatic, is AWD only. It’s wagon variant—the Regal TourX—comes in AWD only with the 2.0-liter engine.

Trim Specifications

The base 1SV LaCrosse comes equipped with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, a 60/40 split folding rear seat, Apple CarPlay compatibility and a 7-inch color touchscreen. But despite its fairly generous list of standard features, it’s only available two colors: Summit White or Black Onyx. For more paint choices buyers must upgrade to the Preferred trim. The Essence trim adds heated leather seats and the option to upgrade to the V6 engine for $2,500; AWD is another $2,200. Premium has a heated steering wheel, head-up display and the Driver Confidence I package that includes rear cross traffic alert, lane change alert and blind-spot monitoring. The V6 engine upgrade is available on the new Sport Touring, but without AWD. The feature-packed Avenir adds signature badging, a unique grille and wheels, a panoramic sunroof and navigation.

Buick Regal Sportback Generations

First Generation

1973 to 1977
The first-generation Regal served as Buick’s affordable luxury sedan. It was a two-door coupe with frameless doors and bucket seats with corduroy upholstery. The Regal was the first midsize car in the U.S. to come with a V6 engine that performed like a V8.

Second Generation

1978 to 1987
The second-generation Regal offered less rigid suspension for a smoother ride quality. A sportier Turbo Regal with stiffer handling and low-profile tires was added for performance-oriented buyers.

Third Generation

1988 to 1996
The third Regal decreased in size and switched from rear- to front-wheel-drive. A six-cylinder engine remained standard.

Fourth Generation

1997 to 2004
A Regal GS debuted for the 1997 model year with the brand’s first supercharged V6 engine rated at 240 horsepower. Buick halted Regal production in 2004.

Fifth Generation

2009 to 2017
After a five-year gap, a fully redesigned Buick Regal debuted for the 2009 model year. In 2011, the Regal received eAssist, GM’s stop/start fuel-saving technology.

Sixth Generation

2018 to Present
The current and sixth generation of Regal debuted for the 2018 model year. The Sportback replaced the sedan, which grew the Regal in size. It also sloughed off between 300 and 500 pounds.
