Volvo XC40 Overview
The Volvo XC40 compact luxury SUV is the smallest SUV in the Volvo lineup. Launched in 2017 as 2018 model, it received a warm international welcome from consumers and critics alike, earning it Volvo’s first European Car of the Year award. To compete in the growing premium compact SUV market, especially in North America, the Swedish automaker quickly ramped up production to meet demand.
Although related to its larger XC60 and XC90 siblings, the XC40’s design features blockier, more playful design. Featuring a typically stylish Volvo interior, the two-row, five-passenger XC40 offers decent passenger room on par with rivals, including the BMW X1 and X2. Power comes from either the turbocharged 187-horsepower T4 front-wheel drive powertrain or the punchier turbocharged 248-horsepower T5 all-wheel drive powertrain. Both use an eight-speed automatic transmission. An all-new all-electric model dubbed the XC40 Recharge is slated to join the lineup in late 2020 in select markets. As Volvo’s first all-electric production vehicle, the XC40 Recharge sets the precedence for electric versions of all future Volvo products.
Trim Specifications
The T4 front-wheel drive powertrain is standard. Upgrading to the T5 all-wheel drive powertrain in all trims is a $2000 upcharge. An all-electric model, the XC40 Recharge, was recently announced, but pricing details and specifications and are scarce beyond a Volvo-estimated 200 miles of range and 402 horsepower.
The base Momentum trim includes 18-inch wheels, a power tailgate, integrated roof rails, exterior features and Volvo’s bespoke T-Tec Textile upholstery as well as power child-lock rear door, an auto-dimming frameless rearview mirror, and heated front windshield wipers.
R-Design adds 19-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, a distinctive black roof, shift paddles and wireless device charging; Inscription sticks with the 18-inch wheels but adds genuine leather upholstery, some wood interior bits, a less intense chassis tune and other elements focused luxury rather than performance.
