Nissan Altima Overview

The 2020 Nissan Altima, just into its sixth generation, is a top contender in the ultra-competitive midsize sedan category. The Altima gets its edge from its spacious cabin, high-tech amenities and the option to upgrade to all-wheel-drive. The Altima comes standard with a front-wheel-drive 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a continuously variable transmission that delivers 183 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. It also has two turbo variants that offer buyers a sportier drive experience without compromising efficiency. The SR and Platinum trims can be equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder variable compression engine with 236 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. This engine is only available with front-wheel-drive.

Trim Specifications

The base S includes an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a rearview monitor, auto emergency braking and intelligent forward collision. A safety technology package that includes standard blind-spot monitoring, high-beam assist and rear cross-traffic alert are a $890 option. The SR gets the safety technology package trim as well as sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters with manual shift mode and sport cloth seats. The SR VC-Turbo performance variant adds a moonroof, active noise-cancelling and heated front seats. The mid-grade SV trim gets ProPilot assist, which is a combination of adaptive cruise control and lane centering, as well as dual-zone automatic climate control and remote start. The SL features upgraded navigation, NissanConnect and leather seats, and the top Platinum trim has a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel. The Platinum VC-Turbo is a level up on the SR VC Turbo amenity-wise, but either is not available with all-wheel-drive, which is a $1,350 option on other trims.

2007 to 2012
The fourth-generation Altima added a coupe when it debuted for the 2007 model year. It again offered features like hands-free Bluetooth pairing, a backup camera and intelligent key technology. This was the first generation of Nissan’s venture into hybrids, with the launch of the Altima Hybrid. It was only available in 10 states at the time, but it paved the way for a future of green mobility..

Fifth Generation

2013 to 2018
The fifth-generation Altima increased in size but remained lightweight. The coupe was discontinued for this generation after six years of availability.
