Required Colorado Auto Insurance

If you own a car in Colorado, you are required to purchase liability car insurance. Liability insurance pays for damage and injuries you cause to others. For example, if you back into your neighbor’s fence, your neighbor can make a claim against your liability insurance to pay for property damage. Car owners in Colorado must buy at least:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury to one person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury to multiple people in one accident
  • $15,000 for property damage in one accident

This is typically written as 25/50/15.

But in many cases, Colorado’s minimum car insurance requirements are simply not enough. If you cause an accident with multiple injuries, you could quickly surpass $50,000 in medical expenses and you could be sued for the rest. If you have savings and assets, it’s important to buy more than the minimum requirements.

Colorado also requires your car insurance company to offer you uninsured motorist coverage (UM) and underinsured motorist coverage (UIM). UM pays for car damage and injuries when a driver with no insurance causes an accident. UIM pays for car damage and injuries when a driver who doesn’t have enough insurance causes an accident.

If you buy UM/UIM coverage, you must buy at least 25/50. You can reject this coverage in writing, but generally, these are coverage types worth having.

What Else Should I Have in Colorado?

Medical Payments (MedPay)

Medical payments (MedPay) coverage pays your medical expenses if you’re injured in a car accident, no matter who is at fault. While your health insurance typically covers injuries, you can use MedPay to pay health insurance copayments, deductibles and co-insurance. In Colorado, $5,000 of MedPay coverage will automatically be added to your car insurance policy, under state law. You can opt out of it in writing or buy more.

Collision and Comprehensive Coverage

While Colorado law does not require you to purchase collision or comprehensive insurance, your car loan lender or leasing company most likely will. Together, collision and comprehensive coverage pay for a host of problems with your own vehicle, like car accidents, collisions with animals, car theft, vandalism, natural disasters (like floods and wildfires), hail, riots and falling objects (like tree branches).

  • You knowingly made a false statement on your car insurance application.
