Prepaid legal services can seem like a good deal: you pay a set amount every month, and you have an attorney on hand when you need one. But these services aren’t the best fit for everyone. It’s important to consider your legal needs and what services a prepaid plan offers before signing up. Your own situation can affect whether these plans are a good deal, and which plan is the best fit for you.

Forbes Advisor has looked at several different prepaid legal services and DIY legal service options to find out what they do well and who they’re best suited for.

Personal plan: $29.95/month or $299.40/year; Business plans: Essentials $49/month, Plus $99/month, Pro $169/month

Editor's Take

LegalShield offers both personal and small business plans. The personal plan offers coverage for unlimited matters, although you may only be able to receive help once per issue, based on the attorney’s discretion. Attorneys may provide one hour of legal research per matter and one letter or phone call regarding the matter. This service covers many of the basic personal legal needs, such as estate planning, traffic tickets, tax audits and document review. If the matter can’t be covered in a single call, or if more in-depth services are required, they’re offered at a 25% discount of the attorney’s hourly fee.

LegalShield also offers supplements to their personal plan, which provide additional services and protection for customers in certain situations. They offer a home business supplement, a rideshare driving supplement, and a supplement for gun owners, among others. These supplements are an additional $14.95.

The business plans offer different services at different price points. All of them offer consultations about new legal matters. Some offer collection letters, IRS audit assistance, and document review as well.

LegalShield does not offer a satisfaction guarantee with its prepaid plans, although they do guarantee that the services provided by the plan will be rendered.

Why they’re the best: LegalShield offers customizable legal services at an attractive price point. Although the number of packages and supplements may initially be confusing, they allow LegalShield to provide its customers with exactly the service that they need, without paying for what they don’t need.

The services provided are in line with other full-service prepaid legal offerings, and many of the services that an average individual might need are covered. In addition, LegalShield offers 24-hour emergency service for members who are detained by authorities, in an accident, or in a situation where your rights or personal freedoms are threatened. This is unique amongst the services evaluated, and offers a huge amount of value for people who are shopping for a prepaid legal plan that will provide them with peace of mind.

Pros & Cons
  • Offers a large number of services, as well as supplemental plans
  • Provides 24/7/365 emergency service
  • LegalShield specializes in prepaid legal plans, instead of offering them as an additional service like some of the providers on this list
  • There appears to only be a single law firm for each state
  • No money-back guarantee

Best Legal Service for Those Who Want it All

RocketLawyer

RocketLawyer

Price

$39.99/month or $239.99/year

RocketLawyer

$39.99/month or $239.99/year

Editor's Take

RocketLawyer offers the ability to have a 30-minute consultation with a lawyer on new matters and a form library with legal forms and guidance on how to fill them out. They also offer a discount on income tax preparation and the ability to ask a question via chat. However, unlike Avvo, RocketLawyer’s chat is private between you and an attorney, so you can ask questions about your own situation.

RocketLawyer does not have an explicit satisfaction guarantee, but they do offer refunds for billing mistakes. It appears that they offer refunds on a case-by-case basis, but you’ll need to speak to customer service directly. They do not offer refunds on business incorporation services, tax preparation services or annual plans that have been in effect for more than 30 days.

Why they’re the best: RocketLawyer offers a lot of the benefits of other services, including DIY forms, direct legal advice and chat with an attorney. They also offer discounts on trademark registrations and LLC formations. If you opt for the annual package, you get a 50% discount over the monthly subscription cost. The discount on income tax preparation alone could cover much of the cost of the service.

Pros & Cons
  • Very affordable annual plan
  • Robust form library
  • Discounts on tax preparation and trademark registration
  • Offers lawyers who specialize in different areas of law
  • No guarantee that you’ll be working with a single lawyer, or even with the same firm, for each matter
  • Does not offer 24-hour emergency service

Editor's Take

LegalZoom’s plan offers 30-minute phone calls with attorneys for an unlimited amount of matters (one call per matter) and access to a library of DIY forms. Business plan members receive additional benefits , including one copyright registration per month.

Why they’re the best: LegalZoom offers a lot of services that are similar to other providers on this list, but they also provide services for authors and content creators. This is the only plan we found that includes a copyright registration every month, and they also have generous legal document reviews that creatives and freelancers may find attractive.

However, note that you have to buy a business plan  to get either of these features. Most creators will find that pricing out of reach. Instead creators can choose the more affordable standalone copyright package for $114 plus fees.

LegalZoom offers a satisfaction guarantee, but it comes with a few caveats. You can contact customer service within 60 days if you’re not satisfied with the service, but this only covers any issues with the service itself—not if you’ve just changed your mind. Any governmental fees paid as a part of the service will not be refunded.

Pros & Cons
  • LegalZoom offers an app that allows you to access the service no matter where you are
  • Offers legal document review for documents of up to 10 pages
  • Discounts on other LegalZoom products
  • Offers a satisfaction guarantee
  • No monthly subscription option; must choose either a 6 month or an annual package
  • No guarantee that you will work with the same attorney each time
  • Only has a single law firm in each state, with a limited number of attorneys (for example, there are eight New York attorneys listed in their directory and 16 California attorneys)

Bizee

Silver package free; Gold package $199; Platinum package $299. State filing fees are separate.

Editor's Take

Incfile offers DIY business formation services. They offer a free silver package with the basics, a gold package that includes help filing for an EIN and additional document templates and a platinum package that includes expedited filing and a domain name.

Incfile does not offer a money-back guarantee. This is, in part, because part of the money you pay is used for non-refundable state fees. However, it may be possible to cancel your order if it has not yet gone to the state. There is a $30 cancellation fee in this instance.

Why they’re the best: The tiered service offerings make Incfile an attractive option. You don’t pay for more services than you need, but if you need some additional help, it’s available.

Pros & Cons
  • One-time fee
  • Different packages for different needs
  • Free plan
  • No ability to speak directly with an attorney if you have questions
  • Not a good choice for anyone who wants a lot of direction
  • No guarantee

Best for Estate Planning

Findlaw

Findlaw

Price

$135 for an individual estate planning package, $255 for two people

Findlaw

$135 for an individual estate planning package, $255 for two people

Editor's Take

Findlaw offers the major documents needed for estate planning: a last will and testament, a living will and a power of attorney. You can purchase these separately, but the package of all three offers a discount. You can make free changes and revisions to your documents for up to a year.

Findlaw offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Their guarantee states that it applies if you are unhappy with your purchase for any reason. You can request your refund via phone or via webchat.

Why they’re the best: For people looking to set up uncomplicated estate plans, Findlaw is an easy and cost-effective way to complete these documents. You can complete your estate plan in just an hour or two.

Pros & Cons
  • Inexpensive one-time fee
  • Quick and easy
  • Free updates for a year
  • 30-day guarantee
  • If you have a more complicated estate or want an attorney to review your completed documents, you’ll need to pay extra
  • No ongoing legal support if you have questions

Best Free Alternative to Prepaid Legal Services

Avvo

Avvo

Avvo

Editor's Take

Avvo is primarily a lawyer directory, but they also offer the ability to ask legal questions that can be answered by attorneys. These questions are made public, so you can read questions other people have asked—and they can read what you’ve asked. This isn’t a service where you can provide confidential details of your case.

Why they’re the best: If you’re looking for the most affordable service, you can’t beat free. Avvo is great for finding answers to general legal questions, and you might even get an answer to your specific question.

Pros & Cons
  • Responses are often provided quickly.
  • You can search questions that were already asked, which can sometimes answer your question as well.
  • No cost.
  • There’s no guarantee that your question will be answered.
  • There’s no way to follow up on the questions you asked.
  • Everyone can read what you’ve posted, so you aren’t able to ask questions about the specifics of your case.

What Are Prepaid Legal Services?

Prepaid legal services are, essentially, a legal subscription program. In most instances, you pay monthly or annually, and in return, you’re entitled to some basic legal services during your subscription period. Some features that most of these plans include are:

  • DIY legal forms
  • Phone conversations with attorneys (most services limit these to one hour or less)
  • Document or contract review

Some subscriptions offer additional services, including:

  • The ability to work with the same firm or the same attorney
  • Emergency representation if you’re detained by law enforcement
  • Copyright filing
  • Help with real estate transactions
  • Legal representation for traffic tickets
  • Estate planning assistance

Pros and Cons of Using Prepaid Legal Services

Legal service plans can be a great option, but they’re not a good fit for everyone. It’s important to evaluate what you’re hoping to gain from a plan and to determine if a subscription will actually save you money. If you have limited or one-time legal needs, it might not make sense for you.

Pros

  • If something happens where you need legal help, you know where to turn
  • It’s easier to predict costs on a monthly or annual basis
  • If you require ongoing document review or need support for your business, it can be an excellent financial decision
  • Often provides discounts on legal fees

Cons

  • Many people don’t require legal services often enough to make these subscriptions cost-effective
  • If you have expensive legal needs (for example, if you need an attorney to represent you in court), you might not wind up saving as much as you think
  • It can be more difficult to establish a relationship with a single lawyer or firm. If it’s important to you to know your attorney, and to be known by them, these plans might not be the best choice

Methodology

This analysis was performed by searching for prepaid legal services. Once the list was generated, information was gathered from the websites regarding pricing, services, and the overall impression of the company.

Reviews were considered from a number of sources, including professional reviews and customer reviews from sites such as G2 and Trustpilot.

Services were then evaluated as to their cost, the availability and breadth of services, reviews, and the ability to consistently work with a single lawyer or firm.

Prices provided are current as of writing, but may have increased. Check with companies directly for the most up-to-date pricing.

It’s important to note that there is no one service that is best for everyone and every circumstance. Rather, this list is created in a way that allows the user to determine what factors are most important to them, and then find the service that is likely to best fulfill their purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do these plans compare to the group legal plan that my employer offers?

Sometimes employers, labor unions or credit unions offer group legal services plans. In fact, some of the companies on this list offer group plans. Group plans can be comparable to individual plans, but it’s important to compare the benefits you’ll receive. It might be more cost effective to purchase an individual plan, especially if it has more benefits you can actually use.

Can I meet with my attorney in person?

You typically don’t have the option to meet with your attorney in person on these plans. This is one of the ways to keep costs low. If it’s important for you to meet with your attorney in their office, you may have better luck looking for a firm that offers their own subscription package.

Are these plans recommended for everyone?

Unlike something like health insurance, these plans aren’t always a good deal. Make sure that you need recurring legal services and that the plan you’re signing up for actually provides benefits you’ll use. Otherwise, it probably makes better financial sense to pay for legal services as you need them.
