What Is A Credit Card Concierge?

A credit card concierge is a service offered by many top tier credit card companies—normally at no additional cost to the cardholder—that offers to help you with some travel or lifestyle tasks such as getting tickets for plays or concerts, restaurant reservations or even personal shopping requests, pet-sitting arrangements and travel reservations.

While most things you can enlist your concierge’s help with are things you are able to do yourself, the value of a concierge relies mostly on utilizing their expertise and saving yourself the time. For example, while you are able to go online and order flowers quite easily at 1800-Flowers, you can leverage your credit card’s concierge to buy flowers from a local florist when your significant other is on a business trip halfway across the world, and easily coordinate a specific time for delivery.

Let’s say you have the perfect vacation already booked but you twist your ankle a few weeks before you’re departing. A concierge can help you secure a wheelchair or scooter rental at your destination so your travel plans aren’t as affected, and you don’t have to scour the internet for local places to procure these services.

Chase Concierge Benefits

Chase offers concierge benefits on a few of its cards, but in reality, the service isn’t run by the issuing bank itself but by Visa, through the Visa Infinite or Visa Signature products. When calling your concierge for the first time, you will be required to answer quite a few questions to create a profile for the program—and choose which of your credit cards you would like to leverage. The concierge service is available 24/7, however note that the concierge is through Visa, and not Chase, and benefits may vary by card.

Visa Infinite Benefits

These are some of the categories of services you have access to via Visa Infinite:

  • Travel and travel related services (tours, experiences, and high-touch services)
  • Reservations at restaurants (both in the U.S. and international destinations)
  • Exclusive or presale tickets for events and experiences
  • Gifts and floral arrangement delivery
  • Other unique lifestyle requests

Visa Signature Benefits

Some of the services you can have access to via Visa Signature concierge services include:

  • Travel Coordination (domestic and international planning for air travel, lodging, recreation, and ground transportation, including reservations and arrangements)
  • Dining, Entertainment & Recreation (including sports and performance event tickets or dining reservations)
  • Personal Services (such as gift ideas and flower delivery)

While there is a lot of overlap between the Visa Signature and Infinite concierge services, the more exclusive Infinite program has more access to exclusive events and presales and the catchall category of other lifestyle requests.

Although the concierge service is free of charge, any purchase of products, reservation or service the concierge procures on your behalf will be charged to your credit card and you will be liable for payment. Notice that your credit card concierge will not be able to help with anything related to your account, whether it’s bill pay, credit line increases, etc. as they do not manage your account itself.

Chase Cards With Concierge Benefits

Chase issues a number of credit cards under the Visa Infinite and Visa Signature products, all of which have access to either concierge service offered by Visa. Some of them are:

Amex Concierge Benefits

Unlike Chase, American Express runs its own concierge program in-house, and since it’s only available through a handful of its top tier cards, the service tends to be more personalized. The concierge team can provide customized assistance for several needs and special requests.

When you call in, you will have to enter your card number in the system so they can identify you and start assisting you. This means they can start helping you right away without having to collect any data about you before doing so. As you would expect, Amex’s concierge services are provided 24/7.

Some of the benefits of leveraging the American Express concierge include:

  • Personalized assistance: The concierge offers personalized assistance that they can tailor to your specific needs, whether this is help with your travel arrangements, dining reservations, help finding event tickets or even gift suggestions for special occasions, anniversaries, etc.
  • Time savings and convenience: One of the best things about relying on a concierge service is its convenience. You can save the time it would take you to do the research, make multiple calls and iron out the details and leverage the concierge’s expertise to do so.
  • Expertise and insider access: Concierge services normally have a network of experienced agents with vast knowledge and, more importantly, access. They can help out secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and tickets for events on presale that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to on your own.
  • Travel assistance: The concierge can assist with travel reservations, including hotel and flight bookings, as well as provide recommendations for local attractions, as well as make bookings for airport transfers for remote locations and even suggestions on how best to plan a road trip.
  • Event planning: Planning events can become a full time job if you’re doing it on your own, but you can enlist the help of your concierge to find venues, caterers, arrange transportation for guests and even select entertainment options like local deejays.
  • Personal shopping: You can ask your concierge for recommendations for gifts for those you love based on their likes and preferences. They will be able to provide options, compare prices for you and even make the purchase on your behalf and arrange delivery, saving you the time to do so yourself.
  • Emergency assistance: On the more serious side of things, should the unexpected happen, your concierge can provide support and guidance on some occasions like lost passport retrieval, or even help you find medical assistance abroad should you need it.

Bottom Line

While the differences between concierge benefits probably aren’t going to play a key role in the decision of which premium credit cards to apply for, it’s worth knowing what your current and future cards can get you in the way of extra perks. The American Express concierge service seems to have more options and offer a few extra perks that the Chase cards do not.

Since the number one feature of a concierge is saving you time, the American Express comes out the clear winner. All of your information is saved with Amex so you don’t have to type it all in again whereas with Chase, before they would help even with a simple restaurant reservation you’ll have to set up an entire profile with Visa. Since this also varies by card, if you were to call in with a different Visa card you’d have to start fresh again.

American Express wins out for its simplicity of use and wide variety of services offered.
