PlayStation Credit Card Benefits

 1. Solid Rewards Rates

The PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* offers above-average rewards on Sony games and Sony products. Video games can be pricey. If you find yourself spending large amounts on games or consoles, this card will give you better returns than a standard rewards card. The card’s increased earnings on cable, internet and restaurants are likewise competitive and could provide outsized value depending on your spending habits.

 2. Visa Benefits

As a Visa credit card, the card comes with a number of benefits baked in, such as roadside dispatch, zero liability coverage, emergency cash disbursement and free NortonLifeLock solutions to help prevent identity theft. These benefits, while standard, can be invaluable in certain situations.

Plus, when you sign up and get approved for the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card*, you may be issued a temporary number to use right away for any online purchase you might make. This means that you’ll be able to add the card to any digital wallets such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, and use the card for your online PlayStation account immediately.

 3. Personalized Card Designs

Are you a superfan of a specific game or series? If so, you’ll be happy to know that you can get a personalized card design with your favorite game characters or top titles.

PlayStation Credit Card Drawbacks

4. Rewards Redemptions Are Limited

The PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* does not have the kind of redemptions options you’ll find on other rewards credit cards. Instead, there is a tiered reward system for points, with the prizes increasing in value the more points you redeem. The tiers are as follows:

  • 0 to 4,999 points: Headphones, gift cards, gear and more
  • 5,000 to 9,999 points: Cameras, speakers, games, accessories and more
  • Over 10,000 points: TVs, soundbars, lenses, collectables and more

You can also use your points for PlayStation Store gift cards at a value of 1 cent per point. Other redemption options include concerts, event tickets and sporting events, but information is vague as to exactly how many points it takes to get a free ticket. Finally, you can use your points to bid for experiences and exclusive PlayStation bundles. But there is no cash-back option or the ability to transfer to travel partners, which limits your redemption flexibility.

5. Welcome Bonus Comes as a Subscription to PlayStation Plus Premium

Unlike many cards, which offer a welcome bonus as cash or as a points currency that can be redeemed for cash, the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card*’s welcome bonus is a year of PlayStation Plus Premium after spending $600 in the first 60 days of account opening, offer ends 9/15/24, worth $159.00. While this is not the end of the world—this is likely to appeal to you if you’re considering this card—it’s not as flexible as cash. Conveniently, if you’re in the middle of an existing subscription, you can wait to apply for the PlayStation Premium Plus credit later.

 6. Other Cards Earn More in Common Categories

While the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* earns bonus rewards on internet, cable and dining, there are other cards that earn more. Cards that earn 5% in more generalized categories or even those that earn an elevated flat rate on every purchase will likely net you more rewards over the long term.

Who Should Get the PlayStation Credit Card?

If you’re a gamer or perhaps the parent of a gamer, then this card gives you the chance to get rewards back for your purchases through PlayStation and Sony. If you spend a lot on cable, internet and restaurants, then you can earn at least 2 to 3 points per dollar back on all those purchases. However, you can get the same rewards from a more generalized card that won’t lock you into the Sony rewards ecosystem.

This card is formulated specifically for those who want to redeem points for Sony games and electronics. If you spend a significant amount on those things and you’re loyal to Sony, this card may net you some benefit. But for most, it should be a second or third card option at best.

Alternatives to the PlayStation Credit Card

PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* vs. Chase Freedom Flex℠

The Chase Freedom Flex℠ card offers a compelling alternative to the PlayStation Credit Card, earning 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in categories that rotate quarterly (requires activation), 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3% cash back on dining and drugstores and 1% cash back on all other purchases. Compared to the PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card*, you’ll earn more rewards with the Chase Freedom Flex℠ in the restaurants and take-out category and you’ll earn more with Chase travel and drugstores, as well. The Freedom Flex also allows you to boost earning in select categories each quarter.

Since these rewards are earned as cash back, you’re not limited to only using them for Sony and PlayStation rewards. You can also earn a welcome bonus of $200 bonus after spending $500 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening and enjoy a 0% intro APR for 15 months from account opening on purchases and balance transfers, then a variable APR of 20.49% - 29.24% applies. Balance transfer fee of up to 5% (min. $5) of the amount of each transfer applies.

PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* vs. Citi Custom Cash® Card

The Citi Custom Cash® Card offers the opportunity to earn 5% cash back on purchases in a top eligible spend category up to the first $500 spent each billing cycle, 4% cash back on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked on Citi Travel℠ portal through 6/30/2025 and 1% cash back on all other purchases. You don’t have to worry about enrolling, just spend like normal and your rewards will track automatically. Eligible categories are: restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, select travel, select transit, select streaming services, drugstores, home improvement stores, fitness clubs and live entertainment.

Similar to the Chase Freedom Flex℠, this card offers a welcome bonus of $200 in cash back after spending $1,500 on purchases in the first 6 months of account opening. The bonus points come in the form of 20,000 ThankYou® Points that can be redeemed for $200 cash back. It also comes with a 0% introductory APR for 15 months from date of account opening on purchases and from date of first transfer for balance transfers completed within 4 months of account opening. After that, the variable APR will be 19.24% - 29.24%, based on creditworthiness. There is also a balance transfer fee of 5% of each balance transfer; $5 minimum.

If you choose this card, keep in mind that you’ll only earn 5% cash back in your single highest top category each month. So make sure to think about your spending habits and if you can make good use of the rewards each month.

PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* vs. Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card

The Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card is an enticing card with no annual fee (rates & fees). You’ll earn 3% cash back on dining, entertainment, popular streaming services and grocery stores (excluding superstores like Walmart® and Target®), 5% cash back on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 8% cash back on Capital One Entertainment purchases, and 1% on all other purchases. Really into your game and can’t stop to get food? The SavorOne card will give you Uber One membership statement credits and 10% cash back on Uber and Uber Eats purchases until November 2024.

Similar to the other cards here, you’ll have a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months; 19.99% - 29.99% variable APR after that; 3% balance transfer fee for the first 15 months, 4% at a promotional APR that Capital One may offer you (rates & fees). You’ll also have the chance to earn a welcome bonus of $200 cash bonus after spending $500 on purchases within the first 3 months from account opening.

Is the PlayStation Credit Card Right for You?

The PlayStation® Visa® Credit Card* was created to draw the attention of those gamers and Sony aficionados, but the card doesn’t offer compelling value outside of your game console. By choosing a different cash-back credit card, you can potentially earn more rewards while gaining greater flexibility for rewards redemptions.
