Required Minimum Oklahoma Car Insurance

Car owners in Oklahoma must purchase liability car insurance. This is a core coverage type that pays for injuries and damages you cause to others. Liability car insurance also pays for a legal defense if someone sues you after a car accident.

In Oklahoma you must purchase liability car insurance with coverage limits of at least:

  • $25,000 for bodily injury to one person
  • $50,000 for bodily injury to multiple people in one accident
  • $25,000 for damage to property in one accident

This is known as 25/50/25.

Oklahoma’s minimum liability requirements are likely insufficient for you. If you cause an accident with multiple injuries and property damage, the resulting bills could easily surpass the minimum limits and you could be sued for the rest. If you want to protect your finances, it’s a good idea to buy higher policy limits.

What Else Should I Have in Oklahoma?

Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Car insurance companies are required to offer you these coverage types in Oklahoma, and you can reject them in writing. But generally, these are good coverages to have.

Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) covers your medical expenses when someone without liability insurance crashes into you. If an at-fault driver has some liability insurance but it’s not enough to cover your injury bills, underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) kicks in and pays you.

Medical payments (MedPay). This coverage type covers medical bills for you and your passengers if you’re injured in a car accident, no matter who caused the accident. MedPay also covers you (and relatives that live with you) if you’re struck as a pedestrian by a car.

Collision and comprehensive coverage. If you want to cover your vehicle for problems like car accidents, car theft, collisions with animals, falling objects, hail, flood, fire, riots and vandalism, you’ll want both collision and comprehensive coverage.

If you have a car loan or lease, your lender or leasing company will most likely require you to have these insurance types.
