Our favorite ways to get rewarded for your purchases is through credit card welcome bonuses and earning points and miles from everyday spending. However, you can also earn bonus miles or cash back from purchases through bank savings programs. The most popular of these is Amex Offers, a savings program for American Express cardmembers.

The savings can really add up—according to Amex, cardmembers have earned over $392 million in statement credits on qualifying purchases after adding and redeeming Amex Offers in 2021 alone.

Don’t kick yourself if you’re one of the many Amex cardmembers who have been missing out on your share of the savings. Instead, here’s what you need to know to start earning bonus points or cash back through the Amex Offers program.

What Are Amex Offers?

Amex Offers are targeted offers available to American Express cardmembers using an enrolled Amex credit card. American Express targets offers to cardmembers differently per card account. That means you may see different Amex Offers across your Amex cards.

After enrolling, qualifying purchases can be made online or in-store, depending on the terms and conditions of the particular offer.

In addition to being targeted, Amex may limit the number of cardmembers that can enroll in a particular Amex Offer. So, it’s important to enroll in offers that you expect to use as soon as you see them. With that said, don’t enroll in offers that you don’t plan to use, as it could limit other card members from enrolling in that offer.

To find which offers you are targeted for, log in to your American Express account and scroll to the bottom of your dashboard. Or you can browse directly to the Amex Offers & Benefits page. If you have the Amex mobile app, you can also access and enroll in Amex Offers right in the app.

Cards Eligible for Amex Offers

Most American Express credit cards issued in the U.S. are eligible for Amex Offers. This includes Membership Rewards® earning cards such as The Platinum Card® from American Express as well as airline and hotel co-branded cards (Terms apply, see rates & fees).

American Express Corporate cards, gift cards and prepaid cards are not eligible to participate in Amex Offers. But, there’s an exception to this limitation: American Express Serve and Bluebird prepaid cards are eligible.

Membership Rewards Earning Cards

We’ve found that cards that earn Membership Rewards points will have some of the most valuable Amex Offers. For example, American Express recently offered Business Platinum cardmembers $150 off a flight purchase of $500 or more through the American Express International Airline Program.

It doesn’t take many of these valuable offers to offset the annual fee—even on premium cards.

Co-Branded Credit Cards

While airline and hotel co-branded cards are eligible for Amex Offers, you’re going to see fewer offers on these cards.

That’s especially the case when it comes to travel-related offers. For example, you probably aren’t going to see a Marriott offer on a Hilton card, or vice versa. It’s also unlikely that you will get a Hilton Amex Offer on your Hilton card. That’s because Amex Offers are used to entice new customers to a merchant. If you already have a co-branded card, Amex likely assumes that you are already a loyal customer.

If you only have co-branded Amex credit cards, you may want to consider diversifying your Amex portfolio to grab access to more Amex Offers.

How To Get Targeted Amex Offers

The method that American Express uses to target cardmembers for Amex Offers is unknown. However, cards that are used more often and premium cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express seem to be targeted for more offers.

The other trick to getting more Amex Offers is to enroll in Amex Offers. American Express will only show up to 100 available Amex Offers at a time. To see more offers, you need to enroll in offers, log out and log back in.

How To Use Amex Offers

After enrolling in an Amex Offer, simply use your enrolled card to make a purchase at the merchant. Make sure to pay attention to any fine print for details about how you have to redeem the offer. Some Amex Offers have limitations like minimum spending requirements or location limitations.

After making a qualifying purchase at a qualifying merchant, you should receive an email from American Express giving you the “great news!” that you just used your Amex Offer:

American Express notes that it may still take up to 90 days for the cash back or bonus points to post to your account. However, the statement credit typically posts to your account within a few weeks.

Different Types of Amex Offers

When you first look at a list of Amex Offers, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—especially when the list stretches 100 offers long. Thankfully, American Express groups Amex Offers into several filterable categories including: Featured, Dining, Services, Shopping, Travel and Entertainment. Alternatively, you can use filters to limit results in various ways like cash back vs. extra rewards offers or in-store vs. online offers.

  • Featured offers—generally directly from American Express. These offers are typically reminders to add an authorized user, use an advertised card perk or spend more on the card.
  • Dining offers—includes national chains, but some local restaurants will also participate.
  • Services—a range of membership, software and personal service merchants.
  • Shopping—these offers are a grab bag of offers that don’t easily fit into the other categories. Usually it’s the biggest category. It’s worth periodically scrolling through the list to see if there’s an offer relevant to you.
  • Travel—offers include discounts on hotel stays and sometimes flight deals will pop up. Travel offers can vary from one Amex card to another, depending on whether it’s a co-branded card or not.
  • Entertainment—mostly focuses on streaming services. These offers may help make your Amex card the best choice among the best credit cards for streaming services.

Enrolling When You Have Multiple Amex Cards

When you see an Amex Offer you like, don’t click “Add to Card” quite yet. If you have multiple Amex cards, you may have a choice to make. That’s because when you enroll for an offer on one card, similar offers won’t be available on your other Amex cards and there’s no way of switching which card is enrolled. Therefore, carefully consider a few things before enrolling.

Different Offers on Different Cards

Amex Offers for the same merchant may vary from one Amex card to another. One may offer bonus points while another card is targeted for a cash-back offer.

Generally, Membership Rewards earning cards will mostly be targeted for cash-back offers in addition to some bonus-points offers. However, Amex will almost exclusively offer cash-back Amex Offers on airline and hotel co-branded cards.

Picking Which Card To Enroll

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing which card to enroll in an Amex Offer. First, if you’re spending toward an Amex welcome offer, you’ll want to prioritize enrolling and using Amex Offers on that card. That way you’ll be able to work toward the spending requirement while earning bonus points or cash back from the Amex Offer.

Next, check your Amex portfolio to see if you have any cards that offer more than 1 Membership Reward point per dollar spent. For example, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express earns 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners up to the first $50,000 in purchases per year, then 1 point per dollar on all other purchases (Terms apply, see rates & fees).

Another option would be the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card*. This card earns 50% bonus points when you use your card 30 or more times in a billing cycle. If you’re able to meet this threshold, enrolling and using an Amex Offer on this card will earn you bonus points—and count as another transaction toward the monthly requirement.

Meanwhile, Hilton loyalists may want to spend on the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card (terms apply). The card offers a free night certificate for spending $15,000 in a calendar year and Hilton Honors™ Diamond elite status for spending $40,000 in a calendar year.

Pay Attention to the Small Print

It’s essential to pay attention to the terms and conditions for each Amex Offer. Some Amex Offers terms require that you use the offer in-store or online. Thankfully, it seems the in-store-only offers vanished during the pandemic. But, it’s still important to check the terms.

American Express also limits some Amex Offers to participating locations or countries. This is most common with travel-related offers, where many are only available for locations in the U.S.—with some Amex Offers also extending to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean.

Combining With Shopping Portals

American Express looks for a qualifying transaction charged to your enrolled Amex card when determining if you used an offer. The vast majority of Amex Offers don’t require you to click through a special Amex link to earn the bonus. That means that you can stack Amex Offers with shopping portal offers.

After enrolling in an Amex Offer, don’t go directly to the merchant’s website to make the purchase. Instead, browse to Cashback Monitor’s website to check the current shopping portal bonuses.

Just by taking this step, you can earn extra points, miles or cash back per dollar spent in addition to the bonus Membership Rewards points you earn through the Amex Offer.

Especially when stacking portal bonuses, you can earn a significant amount of cash back and/or bonus points and miles through Amex Offers. The secret is knowing that this program exists and making sure to take advantage of the offers.
